Pardon if this is in the wrong place.

So early this week I decided to sell two of my camera lenses. To show them off wanted to snap some appealing pictures. It was late in the evening so I opened up a nearby window...laid down 3 pieces of white printer paper and then sat one paper up on a shoebox.

I'm looking for the terminology, or words, to describe how to create this yourself. I believe you can do it with a cardbord box and purchase a certain kind of light. If anyone can help explain or send me to a website to read that'd be great. I can't even google the right words to find what I'm looking for. My mind has failed me.

Here's my shot:

Oh wow, thats awesome.

I'm pretty new to photography, but how do you get those flashes to run constant like that? And how are they powered etc? I want to buy this kind of stuff.

He isn't running them constantly, he is just firing them with pocket wizards when he takes a photo, for this photo he just stepped back... you can get some good priced constant light sources from westcott if you are interested in this.. they will work fine for product shots

what you are looking for is called a "light box" you can do it easily with either the box shown above (with holes cut out on either side, and perhaps the top too, with some kind of light diffusing mechanism (in this case, white pieces of paper)

you can also try doing it in a larger space with just a large piece of white tag-board that is curled in an upward fashion under and behind the object, and if large enough (or cropped tightly enough) you don't need the enclosure; any lighting will do, constant or strobes, you just need to use a slower shutter speed and a tripod perhaps w/o flashes.

So.

If I had a cardboard box, with some sort of white light transparent diffuser such as paper or fabric with a florecent light bulb in a lamp this would generate the same effect?

All these things I could essentially find at a hardware store.

Using fluorescent lights would be problematic. They tend to cycle with the electrical current. Your lighting would be inconsistent.

You'll be OK with fluorescents if you shoot at 1/120, 1/60 or 1/30 second. Or slower. That assures you have at least a full half cycle of light at the power line frequency of 60 Hz.

florecent will work, but i would recomend a couple nice white halogen lamps (just don't let them catch your box on fire) then correct the white balance in post.

brighter is better IMO through the diffusing medium.

tis a good start! Put alot more time and effort into it that i would have; props to you. You have the ability to move and reposition the lights and angle if the lights alot better when that setup; you might get another light so you can have 3 light sources (side, front, back (up or top or bottom etc) looks like it will be alot of fun. You might pick up a piece of plexiglass or a pane of window glass to give that faint mirrored look under the subject (makes it look like its floating on perfectly flat water).
