I can't seem to get a good exposure using the pop-up flash. I want to use the flash as fill-in when in AV or Manual. All I get are very overexposed. Suggests please.

Thanks

I found it a bit bright too, use the flash +/- adjustment to reduce output.

Ian.

Forget about using the built-in flash for anything meaningful. They were added to cameras for one reason alone and that's to make the cameras appeal to a broader range of consumers.

You can get way more functionality out of a shoe-mount flash.

Use the pop up to control flashes that you have off camera - that's the only real use for the popup on the 7D

I'm surprised they fitted a pop-up flash on the 7D.

True about the shoe-mount flash but I disagree you can't get meaningful photos with the built in.

This is just one image I have gotten with the built in. It just takes practice to make it work for you.

I use the pop-up flash on the 7D and rather think it's a useful thing to have on a camera orientated towards wildlife photography (amongst other things.)

Forgot to add, Sagebrush - I adjust the pop-up flash's power (Q button, 2nd row, far right) until it matches the ambient light so it doesn't look too much like I'm using flash. I'm not too good at getting this right first time yet but I'm getting there!

I dont shoot wild life but I would think that flash would scare the animals (it scares humans too). And if you are shooting wild life im pretty sure you are pretty far away, so far away that the flash cant be really effective.

Sometimes they wince a bit and hesitate but it doesn't seem to scare them that much. Admittedly I only do backyard wildlife so they're used to me and sunlight suddenly bouncing off windows and cars, that sort of thing so perhaps they're more tolerant.

If they're further away, I believe wildlife photographers use a Better Beamer on a flash unit to extend its range.

Back to the pop up flash. you just have to play around the flash exposure compensation.
