You are suppose to hit the AF button before you start recording. It will focus and then once you start recording it will try to maintain that focus. It's definitely slow though. I've shot some impromptu vids of my daughter and it did ok.

That was what I had thought was supposed to happen, based on reading the Canon literature. However....if that's the case, let me just say it's REALLY slow! In fact, virtually imperceptible!

I'll try some experiments with that again.

The smileyface AF tries to find faces in view and focus on them. Live mode AF can be used during filming with the AF-ON button, but it'll brighten up the image when it's trying to lock focus.

I realized (or at least thought!!) that is what is supposed to happen. However, it's not happening with my setup.
My question, really, is how to set up video so that AF can be used during filming with AF-ON. Again...it doesn't seem to "work" for me, so I think I am doing something wrong.
Thanks.

AF during shooting works fine for me on the 5d2, using the AF-ON button - yeah, its slow, jerky, the levels change a bit during AF, and it does mess up that portion of your shot a bit, but it can be useful.

Its possible you may have disabled it somehow in your menu?

Go into Live View/Movie Func. Set
Make sure AF Mode is "Live Mode"

You might also check the settings in C.FnIV:Operation/Others
1) Shutter button/AF-ON button: mine is set to 0: Metering + AF start. and
2) AF-ON/AE lock button switch: mine is set to 0: Disable
