Went on a long woodland walk with my wife yesterday. Photography was secondary, so I only took the G9, but we saw a nice range of butterflies, so I thougt I'd post a selection here. Some I had never seen before. All were taken with the G9 in natural light, some have been cropped a bit.
1. Comma
2. Ringlet - though there were lots there, they didn't often set down, and when they did it was often hard to get a decent viewing angle or enough light (they like the shade).
3. Mating pair of Meadow Browns. I was surprised how many of these I saw in the woods, but there were fields nearby.
4. Male Silver-washed Fritillary.
5. Female Silver-washed Fritillary. This had me guessing for a while as it looked so different from the male. I had to look in a few books before I discovered it was the female of the same species. Though the upper wings are very different, the hindwings are almost the same.
6. Female Purple Emperor. This is a lovely big butterfly and though not exactly rare has a very limited range to a few wooded areas in the south of England.
7. This example was quite sluggish, maybe near the end of its life, and my wife was able to get it onto her hand, so you can see the size.
