How cute! Love the shot. The b&w conversion could use a little work. There doesn't appear to be any true white and the mid grey of the skin and background are very similar making it a little flat. I would just try increasing the contrast a little and playing with the orange luminance a little. Gives the skin a little boost.
Also try not to chop off limbs . Wishing his other hand was in the shot. Might have worked better in landscape

Oh yes I too like the second edit, love how it pops... very nice.
