Has anyone used this with the 70-200 2.8L II yet?

I know you lose some light, but what about IQ?

There is a thread on the site that has some comparison shots of the 70-200mm f2.8 IS L M2 + 2*TC against the 100-400mm at the 400mm point.
https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=869226
Also if you read through the thread there are comparison shots from a rebel series camera body as well by the same photographer.

It was enough to convince me to upgrade to that lens (instead of purchasing a 100-400mm) and I've done a few very rough test shots - sadly I will admit none are in ideal conditions (the shutter speeds on the buildlings were really pushing the IS performance!)

100% crops and fullsize images in that set.

Thank you gents, that is exactly what I was looking for!

Looks like a 2x is in my near future, before the Bing runs out...

I use a Canon 2x-II with my 70-200-II and the results are amazing. While I have not pixel peeped to check for image degradation, the photos on my monitor look great and I don't notice the IQ problems that were clearly evident with my original, mark-I version of this lens when coupled with the 2x.

Autofocus on the 5D-II is significantly slower, but not enough to annoy me. It is a great combination, and I no longer feel the need to get the 400mm lens.

Yes, the AF on my T2i slowed down with the Extender on the 70-200 f/2.8L II also. I just rough manual focus and let the AF do the final touch up (that lens lets me MF without flipping the switch).

I did plenty of pixel peeping yesterday and at this point would not buy a 400mm lens. The images are simply great.

Yah the AF does take a noticeable hit in speed, but it still locks on well even in lower lighting - I think that prefocusing with manual and combining that with backbutton AF for easy control over AF kicking in (esp if one uses AIservo for moving subjects) and it should keep things well within a usable tollerance

As mentioned here, AF takes a hit, and it hunts a little more if you aren't close to your focus point, but other than that the results are nothing short of amazing. That a zoom and a 2x can look this good is stunning to me. From my limited experience with the 100-400L, the 70-200II with 2x is essentially identical in image quality at the same apertures. Shots wide open at 400mm, f/5.6, while not as sharp as the bare lens (obviously) are pretty darn good and usable for most any print size. Stop down to f/8 and it's extremely sharp. It never quite gets to the best prime territory, but it's darn good. I just got my (second) 2x today (I had one for a little while but returned it, but after trying one out with my 70-200 II, I picked up another). Quite impressed.

Here's just a quick shot. This is through a fair amount of haze (it was about 80% humidity and 90 degrees here today) at a distance of about a half mile, at 400mm f/5.6:

100% crop with just light sharpening (120%, 0.3 radius):

100% crop from the same spot at f/8:
