I usually shoot Nighttime events so I felt a little out of my element when the sun was out

Did I get the daytime fill flash right here?

I agree - the lighting seems fine. However, I find your DOF a little distracting. Her hair (the little that's there :-)) is OOF, even the highlight on her forehead. I know that's not what you asked for, but something I did notice.

Not sure about the DOF
I guess Ill chalk that up to the crappiness of the kit lens (18-55mm f/3.5-5.6) or maybe my shutter speed was just too slow *shrug*
Here is the Exif:
Exposure 0.025 sec (1/40)
Aperture f/7.1
Focal Length 25 mm
ISO Speed 200
