After more than 1 year lurking and pestering this forum about what lens for birding

I have up to now a 100-400 which never really wowed me and my options were the 300 2.8 + 1.4X or the mighty 500.... well I've made my call, greatly influenced by what I've learned here, and went for the 500

First impression is the obvious one: It IS a beast (and I'm not small myself) but on the other hand I was expecting far less "handholdability" than what really I was able to manage

IQ wise... well, I've no words to describe it ... I was simply blown out :)

Sorry for the harsh light as the photos were taken at noon. Both handheld

You did great. There are no alternatives to the 500L F4 IS. If you can save it, save it for the lens. It will be your one time purchase. There is no ifs or what ifs. You won't need to look for another lens.....
