I've been limping along with a ducati 4gb (45mb/sec) card for a while now. It was from my 40D/5D days and I limped along with it with the 5Dii because 8s and 16s were too new/expensive then and 4gb was usually enough (I have three of them).

But now I want something bigger. I'm thinking 16gb. Anyone against that and more for 8s?

Also, brands? I've ALWAYS bought sandisks, but transcend has a good CF card now thats faster and cheaper (before the MIR).

the 2 I'm considering:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com …ash_Extreme.html#features (external link)
$110
92MB/s read and 87MB/s write

http://www.adorama.com/IDSCFEP16G60.html (external link)
$119 -> $90 after MIR
60mb/sec read and write

thoughts?

I have a Delkin 32Gb 433x CF, but I was looking for something faster. So I bought that same Transcend CF card. It's been pretty good so far for the month I've had it.

Generally, I'm a fan of having a larger number of smaller cards (4x8GB vs 2x16GB), but in some situations having larger cards is helpful and/or required. Shooting lots of video and timelapse come to mind. If I was going to grab a larger card, I'd stick to Sandisk, Lexar or Transcend since they seem to have the most consistent reputations. I think the only gains from jumping from 400x to 600x speeds are the download times to your computer. I have both a 600x and 400x Transcend, and don't really notice any difference in clearing the buffer on my 7D. For the price you listed above, I'd choose the Sandisk over the Transcend.

ordered the sandisk. The other factor is in rob's tests on the 5Dii, the faster advertised transcends can't beat the sandisks, so I think they label/advertise them differently. I like sandisk so I'm sticking with them.

I have a 400x UDMA 16 GB transcend for my 7D. I've been VERY happy with it. As long as it's UDMA, you'll be good. I tested vs. my Lexar 133x 4GB card (used with my 30D) and when I run burst mode on hi-speed, I fill the card buffer and time how long it takes to clear the buffer.

The slower 133x Lexar cards took consistently about 50 seconds to clear the buffer.
I have a 600x (NON-UDMA) that took about 40-45 seconds to clear the buffer.
The transcend 400x UDMA 16GB card ($70 at the time) cleared the buffer in 10 seconds, consistently.

I've been very happy with the card.

I like sandisk, I have never had a problem and they are lightening fast. I have 1x 4gb 45mb/s and 3x 8gb 60mb/s. I subscribe to the theory of spreading the risk, although sometimes it would be nice to have 1x 64gb!!

The 4gb holds about 150 RAW, the 8gb holds around 300 RAW.

Ian.

I have a pair of Transcend 16GB 400x cards. They have worked really well for me. I have put several thousand pics through them shooting sports. I did have one of the cards fail but I am not certain what the deal was. My buddy put the card in his mac book pro to download the images from a softball game and it wouldn;t read it. None of my stuff would read it either. Later, I recovered all of the pics plus some pics from the previous two games by using the San Disk Recovery software. I formatted the card in the PC, then formatted it again in the camera. It is working just fine. Still don't know what happened, but it is back in service again.

I also bought a Lexar Firewire 800 CF card reader. Downloading to my home PC is fast and smooth.

In my wholly unscientific testing of watching the little red light on the camera, I've noticed that the Transcend 400x takes significantly longer to clear the buffer than my 400x Sandisk. Seems to run closer to my 300x Lexar.

You are probably right. I would probably surmise that the same can be said for 400x/600x UDMA Lexar is faster than transcend as well.

I went with Transcend because at the time, it was less than 1/2 the cost of the equivalent Lexar and Sandisk models.

Me too, and I'd do it again. Transcend offers great bang for the buck.

Me 3 ;-)a The Transcend are 1/2 the price of the Sandisk in Canada, and they have been very reliable for me over the last 6 years of using them in different bodies.

A couple of weeks ago i bought A-Data's UDMA 533x cards. I noticed it's a bit faster than my old Extreme III. It's now $50 for 16gb. Now I don't have to worry about occasional videos consuming memory space.

I have the transcend 16gb 600x for the 7d and a 32gb 400x for the mark II... they are fast and I have had no problems with them... lexar however (die!die!die!) Sandisks are nice too but they were more expensive at the time.
