Hello Everyone. Lately, my 16-35L II has been set to its 35mm focal length. I am trying to practice on fixed focal lengths (35mm and 85mm). NOw that I am getting used to it, I want to know if there is a substitute for a 35L? I am looking for the same focal length, quite decent result (unfair to compare non-L to L) and at way lower price ($400-$600 range).

I have no plans of selling my 16-35L anytime soon that is why I am trying to look for some lenses that may give decent IQ in the fixed 35mm focal length.

I forgot to mention that this will be for full frame sensor camera.

Thanks.

No, not really... that's why I ended up with both the 16-35 and the 35L.

I do use the 35L much more, but it just depends.

I''ve heard good things about the Sigma, but in my limited experience with it, I didn't like it as much as the 35L.

Others will tell you that it is fine. Try both if you can.

Is there a Sigma 35mm or another Sigma lens? The Sigma 30mm is for cropped sensor, i think.

Ah, sorry... thought you had a crop body...

Yeah, 35 ƒ2, is not even an option, honestly.

That is what I thought too. So I guess the only option will be the 35L...

If you can stretch your budget a little bit, you can pick up a second hand Zeiss 35 ZE. Awesome lens and very different in rendering from your current glass.

If you don't mind manual focus, there is rumours of a Samyang 35mm 1.2 coming out soon. The images I've seen from their 85mm and 14mm are very good, so I have high hopes for the 35mm.

Yep, excellent lens - blows the 35L away in every respect wide open. No AF though obviously. Typical going prices are between $1000-$1500 for the Rollei version. There is also a Contax version with essentially the same optics but with different coating. The Rollei version has three aperture blades creating some very interesting bokeh when stopped down. The Contax version is more conventional with 8 aperture blades.

That ebay auction you linked to has just started and I'd be very surprised given the description if it sold for less than $1200.

The Zeiss 35/2 Distagon ZE is an excellent lens as well with the great advantage of being native EF mount. It is quite different from the 35/1.4 in rendering style and you can get a new one for $1000. Given that a used 35/1.4 in good condition goes for at least $1200 the 35/2 is probably a better choice if you are on a budget.

Nope, different version. There are a bunch of different versions out there. Specifically the one I was talking about was the HTF Rollei version. Their model had T* coating which could be one of a couple of versions. They have been building this lens since the early sixties so it has gone through a number of iterations - it can be difficult to tell them apart. Anyway, I should amend my statement - it's not true that it's better than the 35L in every respect wide open. The corners are somewhat better on the Canon, but that's pretty much a non-issue at f/1.4. If sharpness across the frame is a priority then the Zeiss 35/2 is a better choice. The 35/2 corner performance, although not stellar should be better than the 35L at the same aperture.

Center sharpness of the 35/1.4 is (regardless of version) most likely better than the 35L, but that's not really the big attraction of this lens. It is its rendering style - colors, micro contrast, bokeh etc

Edit: Aha, their version is the Contax/Yashica.
