I'm thinking about picking one of these up (they're the cheapest ones) and I was wondering if its a good starter bulb?

I saw them on ebay for 30$. I have an XS and am prepared to pick up the remote trigger as well. I'm just wondering which strobe I should go for.

They are very good, get the 460II version though.

I've never used manual ocf or lighting before, would the 460 cause me to run into problems? I'm trying to keep costs as low as possible so if the 460 will suit me I'd like to go with that.

You won't find anything better for the money...
Make sure you get some 2700 or 2800 mah batteries for better performance.

its is good, but if you pretend to do shooting on outside, you may want a stronger flash, like the yn-460 mk2 to be able to "compete" with the sun ;)

Are you absolutely certain that you do not want E-TTL? While the previous comments have correctly indicated that the YN-460 is a capable budget-priced flash, it is fully manual. This is fine for situations where you have the time to determine what flash intensity to use to suit your desired aperture setting/ISO combination, but it will not suit your needs if you will be shooting in a rapidly changing environment where you need the flash to automatically adjust its output by metering a preflash.

With all the recommendations that are often offered to control your flash output manually, do not underestimate the value of automated E-TTL. Certainly, there are times when you will want to control your flash output manually, but there are also candid photo opportunities where you need the flash to figure out everything for you before the photo opportunity is lost.

the YN460 is a good beginner flash with full manual controls and optical slave but you might want to consider an ETTL model that also has manual controls like the YN465 - (less than $70) or maybe the YN-467

If you're gonna be using the YN-460 for off camera then it's perfect. But for on camera it's going to be quite challenging for a beginner. If you're going to be using on camera flash, then pick up a flash with ETTL such as the YN-465 at the bare minimum.

While we're on the subject, I may be in the market for a couple of these. Before I do, does anyone know if they work with Strobies wireless triggers? They don't fire my Sigma 500 DG ST, so I'm looking for something cheap and manual.

Cheers.

Ah, stuff it! Just ordered one off Amazon, delivered for £40. If it works, I'll be getting another one, and making use of that rather nifty-sounding slave function.
