Hello guys. I just got a used 40D and tested it. It seems that there is a problem with the shutter release button or maybe it was just made that way.

Whenever I click it to take a picture, it seems that I need to press it hard even after feeling the click in the button.

Has anyone encountered this? Is the shutter button for all 40D this way?

You do realize that there is a half-press to set the focus then the second part of the shutter's travel is the full press to take the picture right? Not trying to insult your intelligence but I don't know your level of familiarity with cameras in general so forgive me if this seems elementary.

The shutter press on my 40D is pretty much the same as any other SLR I've used. It shouldn't take any extra effort to trip the shutter.

No offense taken. I know the half-press to lock focus.

I have a 20D and the camera responds whenever I feel the "click" in the button. With the 40D, it takes more effort and pressing to have the camera take the shot. there are times, seldom, that it takes it when there is a "click" in the button.

It will more than likely require a new shutter button, common on the 30/40/50D..

Yep, needs a new shutter button, I encountered this problem and got it replaced. Worked like a charm after that.

There is a fix involving alcohol that has worked for many. I've never tried it so I can't comment.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Might want to return it to the seller if that wasn't advertised. Sucks to get a used camera with non-disclosed problems.

I don't believe the OP said there was a problem as such - just that the shutter button was 'different'. He neglected to say whether it actually works or not - if it did not work, I'm sure he would have.

The shutter button problem he describes sounds very much like a dirty low-functioning shutter button issue to me. It should not be 'different', when he presses the shutter it should focus halfway and take a picture when fully pressed unless something in the viewfinder is flashing (focus confirmation button if not in focus, aperture or shutter speed if proper exposure is not possible and safety shift is not engaged). It sounds broken to me, and my 40D does NOT do that. It should feel the same as the 20D.

It does focus lock on when I press the shutter button halfway. It is only when I need it to fire that I need to press harder at times. It could be a case of loose contact or connection.

Yes, the seller indicated that I could return it. I am currently in contact with him. Good thing he lives close to the city I live in. At least there is no need to ship the item.
