Here are a few shots I did for a friend and her Boyfriend.
I know some of them are underexposed (that's what happens when your shooting manual and go between a nifty and kit lens without changing anything OOPS! I now shoot AV most of the time lol) they were very happy with the results! I am very excited I got to do this, but now I want the honest to God truth. How's composition and lighting in the other photos?

#1 (underexposed, I know lol)

#5 (probably blown out... I mean... the sun is in the shot... but I loved the way it turned out... how do I make this "work" for future shots?)

I think most of these images would have been helped with some fill flash. They seem a little flat and have no POP to them. I'm sure you took some, but part of Prom is clothing. Would like to have seen some dress/tux shots.

Exposure isn't good, as you say yourself. Next to that the images don't seem to be very sharp in the faces, but that's hard to see at this size. I think it's too bad the guy's head was cut in #2.

Did you shoot in RAW? If so, you can probably fix some of the exposure issues quite easily.

All is not lost.

Photoshop....
Open the file...
Duplicate the layer
Change blend mode to SCREEN
Duplicate the SCREEN layer
Change opacity to taste.... I think the second screen layer was @ 70% opacity.

Still Underexposed, IMO. I push the EV during capture and bump the blacks in PP for some great clarity results without adding anything else to my images.
IMO, it's easier to drop the EV in PP, than push it.
I use flash during the day to kill shadows too. The girls were shot with only natural light, but the Jorge Lorenzo image was with onboard flash with my, Nikon D40
You can see the shadow on the guy behind. Without flash, the sun can cast some dark shadows in your images during the day. Flash also helps to separate the subject from the BG.

Like the other poster asked, are you shooting in RAW? If not you need to because you can pull so much more out of your images then you could ever get with a compressed image. I have made the mistake of changing shooting modes or lenses and realizing after the fact my mistake. Because I shoot in RAW I was able to correct any issues in PP. It is always best to have everything perfect in the camera to save on PP work, but if you forget RAW can save you.

I don't shoot RAW, I haven't needed to since this photoshoot because I've kept up with it. I will try to find some more recent photos. These were my favorite compositions though, for the most part at least.

I guess I just need to suck it up and start using photoshop....
is GIMP just as good!?

here's full shots (I am doing this through facebook, and I don't want to look through my files to find ALL the photos)

They're very flat looking. You should shoot raw and do a CWB too ;)
Add some extra fill flash and see what looks best.
IMO, nothing is better than photoshop

Yep, underexposed, flat and look very snap shot-ish.

Learn how to use flash so it benefits you. Just keep learning from your mistakes and get better. Good luck.
