24mm or 45mm T/S Lens?

I have the Canon 90mm T/S lens, and I like it a lot. Now I'm thinking of adding the 45mm, or the new 24mm, and I'm not sure which way to go.

I have the 17-40L and the 70-200 f4L, so I do have a gap between 40-70mm. That said, I have the 5D MKII and the 7D, and with the addition of a 1.4x teleconverter the 24mm would give me the ability to use the 24mm lens at 24, 34, 38 and 53mm, with the 2x adding even more options, although I'm not sure if image quality holds up when using this lens with the 2x.

I mostly do general wildlife/nature/landscape photography, but also like to photograph old barns, sheds, and even some city architecture. I would appreciate any advice before making a decision.

Thanks, Mary

As soon as you said landscape and old barns, I would go 24 TS-E mk II. Optically is is a big step up from the older series and the focal length is basically 'standard' for landscape shooting.

I have the mk I and am going to be upgrading to the mk II before the fall color season since the IQ is only o.k. when using the 5D on the older one.

The TS-E is a big step in IQ over the 17-40 @ 24. So I doubt you will be overly concerned about the 'double' 24s once you have shot it a few times.

I'd even be leaning towards the TS-E 17 - for city shots, the insides of old barns, etc., you'll appreciate the extra width.

I have the 24 and highly recommend it. I've used it with the 1.4 Extender and it's fine. Looking at your website, it seems like the 24 would fit nicely with the kind of shooting you do. However, if you're going to do a lot of T/S shooting with the 7D, you may want the 17.

The TS-E 24 is an amazingly sharp lens.

I'm waiting for 24L TS-e mk2 to come on sale locally.... This is a rare lens to find used as people who buy them love them... I'll give it a month to find one, but I may just have to buy it new..

I'll second this statement wide open at f4 it's one of the sharpest wide angle lenses I've used. PM me if you want to see some samples shot with the 17 TS-E as I did a lot of landscape and city shooting with the TS-E 17 while over in China. You could also use a 1.4x TC on the 17L to make it a 24mm equivalent but of course you'd have a 24mm f5.6 at that point.

I'll also recommend the 24 II; outstanding in every way. I actually sold my 17-40 and 24-70 for it, fearing I would miss the width. I was reassured, however. Do not underestimate how wide it can go with shifting and stitching.

Thanks so much to all of you for your help. I followed this thread through the day, and decided to pick up the 24 II this afternoon. While I was very tempted by the 17, I think that the 24 is more suitable for my style. That said, if, after giving the 24 a good trial, I feel that I should have gone with the 17, I will make an exchange. I tried the 17 at the camera store, and I liked it, but I was concerned about flair. Also, I frequently use neutral density grads, and they aren't compatible with the 17 -- nor is a polarizing filter. And that big, exposed bubble of glass in front of the lens looks like an accident waiting to happen, at least in my hands.

Again, thanks so much for the input.

Enjoy the 24 II - you won't be disappointed :) I will say that flair isn't too bad on the 17 but I definitely hear you on the inability to use filters which is why I picked up the 16-35 as well. Good luck and be sure to post up some shots with the new lens!
