So now that I finally bought into the iPad, I decided that since it can do a bit more, I should be able to edit just as well on it vs a computer (in theory).

Here are some results.

Bit of a shadow on the face but not really got a tool yet to edit that unless I go to Lightroom.

It seems to be pretty handy. Bit for speed, I would still prefer a PC.

I would like to know how the iPad can be integrated into a photographers life, can you tether, use it as a traveling mega-portfolio, etc. Please keep us posted as to how you use it and you experience with it.

Thanks,

can you directly edit the photo on the IPAD using a pen tool? like a Bamboo pad with screen?

Thanks,

It is pretty handy. The camera kit has even picked up RAW files from the Sony NEX-3. There is no RAW support even via Lightroom 3 so that was a bonus for me. The downside, no video import abilities with the camera connection kit. No direct tethering but once done, import your images and start editing.

Also, you cannot sort folders for import directly unless you use iTunes but you do not need to use iTunes for files imported directly onto it since it shows as a "DCIM" style folder so imports to computers is fairly easy.

Kind of but not as accurate so on a train, need to take more time but its great with practice. You can change brush sizes and softness etc. Here is a quick pic whilst editing.

The apps are pretty affordable also. The most expensive photo editing program was £1.59 so not much at all.

I used Photo Gene and Photo FX. Photo Gene is much nicer to edit the photos for exposure and cropping since you can set various aspect ratio's which is better than guessing.

Photo FX is much more advanced and is pretty much all about using presets/filters such as ND grads, colour adjustments. Also can add in tilt/shift effects or increase "bokeh".

Still need to practice but considering what you have available via the App Store, in theory and in the right hands, I would say it could be a replacement to a laptop and im slowly leaning that way. Since battery life has been great (may not last), ive managed about 6-7 hours photo editing time mixed in with video playback and Flickr uploads before needing to charge.

These were originally converted from RAW to JPEG via Lightroom then just synced as a folder to the iPad. All edits done with the above mentioned software.

wow!! if that is possible, I might give that Ipad a try when it arrives here... I want to be able to sort of edit with a pentool on the photo itself.

the way you describe photo FX is more like Lightroom?

It is and then it isn't. It has some similar featrues but it is more preset based which is great since you can work quickly. You have a brush mode available in any preset so say you have a portrait shot like above, apply the filter then you can use the brush tool to remove the blur from the edges, hair etc.

The biggest downside, if you are not 100% accurate and save a file then come to look at it on a computer, you will need to start all again. For some reason, the iPad file system will pick up RAW's/JPEG's but only save the file via the apps as a new JPEG so always a "save as" option.

Pogo DO make a stylus for the ipod/phone and pad so might be a thing to consider.

The biggest issue with the iPad is the cost. Unless you have a specific need, it is just a mahoosive iPhone.

Thanks,

I use mine as a portfolio. I also use an app that allows me to fill out my photography contract PDF. In addition, the client and I can sign the PDF right there on the spot (writing with your finger) and then instantly email it out to each of us.

It's awesome!!

It's called Zosh. It's $2.99 US. It is currently made for the iPhone, even though it works on the iPad as well. For most iPhone apps running on the iPad, there's a button 2X that sort of zooms in and makes the app fit the iPad screen. It gets a little jagged, but it's plenty legible. You just associate your email address with the Zosh app. Then you can email documents to mydocs@zosh.com (external link) from the email address you associated with the app. Once you do that, your documents are then located in Zosh. You just open it up, tape Insert > Text, then start typing.
Then, when you want to sign the document, you tap Insert > Signature. It draws a line, and you just write on the screen.

that feature is very good..I like that It does something like that, at least I am sure I won't be saving it on the original file.

the cost of the ipad is for me more than reasonable considering its features compared to say macbook. I am thinking of getting one ipad and 1 new laptop (window 7), in total they are less than the price of 1 mbp hehe..

and specially now that you showed me what it can do... hmmm I would've wanted to buy a 24" ips panel, but instead might buy this first hahaha I am not in a hurry though, and the Ipad is still not yet available here in our country.

Forgive me if I fail to understand this but why would someone spend so much money for an ipad for this purpose when you can get a full fledged notebook for the same price? something capable of running photoshop, offloading CF cards, etc?
