If you couldn't afford a 17-40 and you only had a $250-$400 to spend on a used wide zoom lens and you needed it to be EF, not EF-S.....What would you choose?
Heading on a trip in a little over a week and I have no wide zoom for lanscapes:( and funds are limited right now......

If I don't come up with something I suppose I'll rent.

Why not just rent one? I would personally just save and get what would be perfect rather than get something to "just do"

Well, I was going to suggest the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8, but from looking at EF, seems like you're on FF. Then 28-75mm f/2.8 would be the other one, considering 28mm is wide enough for you.

Canon 20-35mm f3.5-4.5 USM
Tamron 17-35 f2.8-4
Sigma 15-30mm

Or the original plastic fantastic Tokina/Tamron 19-35 f3.5-4.5 - those are like $100 used.

The Tokina 19-35 F/3.5-4.5 is a well built highly underated cheap wide angle. It is really sharp stopped down. (I know. What lens isn't stopped down?).

Your only problem is finding one.

Whenever I own a 17-40 or 16-35 they just collect dust in my bag...Don't need a perfect wide angle, I'll be using a tripod, stopped down......I know there are some decent 3rd party options like the ones "tkbslc" just posted.....Thanks

Canon 20/2.8 USM. Nice lens within your budget. Plenty wide for most purposes. Not too big or heavy, plenty sharp and well corrected. Zoom with your feet.

I'd go for either a Canon 20-35 or 20/2.8 prime - but then, around 20mm is my favourite superwide FL.

this member was looking to trade their 20-35L...maybe you could just buy it straight up, as it looks like 2 weeks before she was willing to sell for $370...

Not TOOO old

Sadly KEH doesnt have any of them...it didnt last long in Sigma's lineup iirc and didnt sell well because the 15-30 shined more...and it started at "only" 20mm

But they do have this, the 17-35 f/2.8-4

http://www.keh.com …1/sku-CE09999049057J?r=FE (external link)

iirc, this was a good lens when i was buying my 15-30 back in the day....I remember considering it before i said sod it and bought the 15-30 for the absurd AOV...

But heres some info on the 20-40

http://www.adorama.com …or-Canon-EOS-Cameras.html (external link)

http://www.ephotozine.com …cal-DG-DF-2040mm-f28-4600 (external link)

Seems like the big complaints were the 82mm filter size and the fact it was big and heavy for what it was...
