this isn't very artistically oriented, but I find myself in a rather irritating position - dealing with large number of files, located within large number of sub-directories, that need to be resized.

I can find a lot of programs that will take subfolders on the input end, but nothing that'll retain the folder structure in the OUTPUT.

example of what i'm looking for:

INPUT
\full size pics\
\sub_1\
\sub_2\
\sub_3\

OUTPUT
\resized pics\
\sub_1\
\sub_2\
\sub_3\

any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

photoshop actions/automation tool, and just do each folder separate in a different directory.

I use ACDSee Pro for my batch resizing. It doesn't keep file structure, so instead of running a batch of each folder I would sort into folders after resizing.

I know this isn't the perfect solution but it's a solution to consider if you can't find what you are looking for. A change in work flow might be what is required.

Yep. More specifically: Bridge > Tools > Photoshop > Image Processor.
Either that or create a droplet.

thanks for the help guys, i actually found out that Photoshop CS5 does subfolders without a problem.

it's not a matter of work flow, it's not for my personal photos. I took my camera in for my work (architecture), and shot a bunch of field survey shots. i didn't anticipate a file size problem when i started the process.. >_<
