so the thread on my kit lens is a little worn, from cross threading I think. Is there such thing as 58mm - 58mm plain metal ring? I guess I can step it up to use a bigger filter but I have UV and CPL in 58mm so that'd be pointless.

Funny I just thought of that right after I post. Also I thought of just stop it up and down but that'd probably vignette, although I used a CPL stack on a UV on this kit lens before. 6D | 30D | Powershot S5 | 10-22 f/3.5-4.5 | Tamron 17-50 non-VC | 24-105 f/4L IS | 50 f/1.8 | 85 f/1.8 | 100 f/2.8L Macro IS | 580EX II | Cactus V5

The best solution would be to replace the front ring on the lens. I doubt that's too difficult to do, but I don't have the same lens to be allow me to look at it and help you figure out how to do the task. Skip Douglas

I highly doubt that's be doable for me, because the "front ring" and the inner barrel (one that moves in and out when focusing) is one injection molded piece. Doing that would be disassembling the whole lens. 6D | 30D | Powershot S5 | 10-22 f/3.5-4.5 | Tamron 17-50 non-VC | 24-105 f/4L IS | 50 f/1.8 | 85 f/1.8 | 100 f/2.8L Macro IS | 580EX II | Cactus V5

Cokin makes "Extension Rings" for their filter systems.
