That would be the longest thread ever. :p

It would be impossible to keep up with it and even more impossible to keep a complete list. These scams are a dime a dozen.

Agreed, there is no sticky needed, just use common sense, and as we have seen many times, there are already all kinds of info as stickies, yet somehow, the same questions come up. :)

You would at least think that the Nigerians would hold workshops in order to teach their scammers better grammar.

i'm actually curious how this is a scam. assuming it is and he/she phished an ebay account with the paypal as well, how would the scammer get the money? it just seems like there would be an easy trail to follow. it'd have to be deposited in a bank account somewhere unless they figured how to spend thousands of dollars for non-materialistic items.

The answer seems like a dead giveaway, it is a variation of many others that "we are not in the area right now, but send the funds in one way or another and we will be sure you receive this". Always follow up things like this with "I can wait until you are back", "how do you find ISO 12800 performance on this camera", etc. Leading questions that might snag the would-be scammer...

Hijacked Pay Pal account. They transfer the money out before people know.

Or may be you'll get an e-mail which looks like from paypal with the message money received; and if you ship the item without checking your paypal account you are out of luck (although I wonder who'd do that).

You'll get an email that says "My PayPal account isn't working for some reason. However, eBay's agent will accept funds that you send by Western Union and hold the money in escrow until you receive and inspect the item."

Pay Pal also won't chase money sent out of the country. So the scammer setsups a bank in Nigeria, transfers the moeny there, withdraws it the day it arrives, and closes the account.

Today "Ben" emails me and says:
===============

All i need from you is your ebay id ,your full name and your shipping address .

===============

Ben,

That sounds super good. I can't wait to take some pictures of my new girlfriend. She is nice.

My ebay ID is : vid1900

My contact information:

Attention: Frank Figliuzzi
1501 Lakeside Avenue Cleveland, OH 44114
Phone: (216) 522-1400

===============

Of course that is the address and phone # of the Cleveland FBI, but we will see how the scam unfolds...

oh, okay. this is what i didn't know. if you hijacked an account and sent the money elsewhere, there'd still be a paper or electronic trail. i didn't know paypal wouldn't chase it once it left the US.

speaking of nigeria, i've gotten a twist on the nigerian scam emails in my junk folder recently. instead of a nigerian prince, it's a US soldier's money in China.

The scam is changing directions!

Of course I gave "Ben" a fake ebay ID name. He actually tried to look it up:
===============

Your ebay id is not working ...sorry

===============
Ben,

I just logged in and it is working right now. Please try it again.

How fast can you ship? Don't sell the camera to anyone else!!!!!!!!
===============

So now it looks like it might be a ebay account hijack scam.....
