A lot of people have been asking how powerful the YN560 is w.r.t the 430ExII so did some quick test.
Sorry for the eyesore scene, but I went down and dirty and just pulled the car out of the garage to make some room.

These were taken in the dark at 1/200, F/11, ISO100. Converted from RAW to JPEG in DPP without adjusting anything.

I think it's clear who the winner is. The 430EXII seems to be brighter (I don't have a lightmeter so don't really know exactly how much, but from the samples above, seems like 2/3rds to a whole stop. But the shots at 105mm show the 560 is brighter at the center.

All the photos were taken on tripod with the 18-55IS at 18mm.

My impressions: The buttons on the YN560 are very convenient and allow quick changing of settings. The built of the body is similar to the 430EXII with really good quality. The bad quality feel comes once you look into the flash head, especially if while the head is zooming in or out.

Great recycle time, really nice slave modes (one of them to handle pre-flash from other sources).

YN560:

Pros: A lot of features
+ it tilts down unlike the 430EXII.
+ Built in slave.
+ Great build quality.
+ I paid $77 only.

Cons:
- Zoom head seems fragile, although I'm only talkign about the feel, who knows how durable it might be.
- Not as powerful as expected.

Thanks for that.

I think this illstrates why Guide numbers are all a bunch of crap. If you zoom into the tiny center portion, yes the Yongnuo is throwing light a little farther, but it isn't actually doing anything beneficial for us.

Agreed. I don't know why but I have this itch to open this unit up and replace the front flash bulb cover (the transparent cover) with something better, maybe, canon's if available, and see how it changes things.

But before I do that, I'll be spending this weekend, messing around with some sweet new umbrellas and multiple OCF. w00t!

I don't know a lot about flashes or anything but just a question. In the 105mm pic with the 560, would what looks like a narrow beam in your garage not be the right spread of light if the pic was taken with a lens at 105? or would it still look center bright.

Just seems that for such a high zoom setting, the 430 throws a lot of light wide and all over the place? It is clearly better at the wide angle though.

I wonder how this test relates to my YN-468. Thanks for posting the results

do it now the opening of the unit .. :D hehehhe maybe you can find the trimmer and adj it to produce more power? as it has very very fast charging... probably short changing the capacitor for the recycle times? it seems too fast for the supposed rated GN.

tnx for the review...

But I think it would be beneficial the more light throw on the 105mm ... ie need concentrated light to over power sun with 2 - 4 of these... or maybe just 2 of these ( adjusted )

@GaBoon: That's what I've been thinking too. If the lens was zoomed in to 105mm, the 560 looks better than the 430. Maybe I'll do that test too, at 105mm.

@aerosmith: I think I'm going to wait before I mess with any electricals given I waited 2 weeks for it to ship to me and I haven't done any shooting with it yet. :p

darn :D tnx for the effort and nice review.. :D I'm not suggesting you mess with it :D I was just hoping to see a trim pot in the internals and hopefully that can be adj to give additional power :D ( pictures would be nice too :D )

Hehehe I'll try to open it up as soon as I'm done messing with the strobist setup I acquired recently with this. :)

Has anyone gotten the YN-560 to work in S2 mode with a Canon wireless master in ETTL mode?

I can get the YN-560 to work in S1 mode but it will only trigger correctly if the Canon master wireless is in manual control.

This is certainly interesting, and a bit disappointing. I was expecting to see at least a little more power than the 430.

then again, it's only $85. I'd like to see this against the LumopPro lp160 too, that is twice the cost...

@aerosmith: Sorry man, been caught up in some stuff!

I would love to see someone pitch the lumopro against these two if possible.
