I need some help. I am going through some photos I took today and noticed that a couple of them have some noticeable vertical banding. I am not a pixel peeper, but a previous shot to this one was showing some weird artifacts. So when I got to this photo I went ahead to look for critical focus when I noticed the following.

Anyways, I had just received this camera back from Canon for repairs to map out some hot pixels in video mode. I am hoping this is all user error but need some opinions.

-I am not adverse to criticism to my photography skill being suspect - if this is the case please tell me how I fell into this pitfall.

Ok now the pics: (no PP done)(I did run it through define 2.0 after this post, but the vertical bands remained)
100% crop

Follow on photo (100% crop) that shows no banding:

I am not here to flame my camera or anything. I just need to know if this is a common problem and I exposed incorrectly, talked or looked at my camera wrong or if I need to again call Canon support for another trip back to the repair pool.

Thanks for any help.

Rob

Weird - mostly done with going through my photos and I noticed it was a string of 5 shots. The first shot had horizontal banding of the same magnitude and was followed by 4 shots with the vertical banding as noted above.

After that all looked fine for the next 60 shots. It almost appears my 5DII had a sensor hiccup.

I saw that thread but that shows patterned noise. This doesn't look like any pattern noise in the shadows.

Of course I could be totally ignorant to the fact that this banding occurs at all levels of exposure and then goes away after 4 shots under similar lighting conditions. Hmmm.

(Edit) - nevermind I see more shots showing this.

There's no explanation obvious to me, assuming that the ISO and exposure were basically the same for all the shots. I suspect this will require sending it back to Canon. Is there a possibility of some kind of RF interference during your shooting?

Some Canon stuff and a little bit of Yongnuo.

What kind of lighting did you use? Perhaps a radio trigger to trigger an external flash? That could explain the banding, due to the radio waves interfering.

Lighting conditions were similar. I don't believe there was any RF interference. TBH that would have to be some serious interference to do that. I am gonna be running up to Mt. Rainier today and will take some more shots.

I did not use any radio poppers though I have them.

The thing that bothers me is it appears in the highlights. It's pretty inconsistent though. I did a search on google and found one other situation that resemble this vertical banding. Some guy was using video but his was extreme.

Yes it's much more pronounced (i.e. no need to pixel peep) but the pattern is very similar.

Thanks so far for the responses. Gonna give this one more day for someone to pipe up with a "you so messed up the exposure and here's how" but I am not too hopeful.

The problem clearly has to be your exposure or your technique, because everyone knows the 5Dmk2 doesn't exhibit any banding or pattern noise unless you're doing something wrong!

Seriously, though, this is quite unusual. You might want to consider sending your camera back to Canon for servicing, especially if you can work out how to reproduce this at will. Since they presumably gave it a clean bill of health before it left their facility, it's on them to fix it and you'll probably even be able to get a shipping label from them so you won't have to pay for shipping.

This banding looks alot different than the low iso noise banding in the 5dmkII. This looks like something wrong with your sensor.

After heading to Mount Rainier and snapping a bunch of photos, it appears to occur randomly and has no bearing on exposure.

Examples of 2 photos 100% crop taken back to back.
Post size sharpening not performed. The lines are much more visible:

HTTP response: NOT FOUND | MIME changed to 'image/gif' | Redirected to error image by FLICKR

Follow on photo - no banding (not pushed)
IMAGE NOT FOUND
HTTP response: NOT FOUND | MIME changed to 'image/gif' | Redirected to error image by FLICKR

Both photos are at f/11, iso 100, 1.0 secs, 280mm
The variable in exposure was due to bulb mode and I must've released the cable a split second earlier but still reg'd as a whole second.

So hopefully this post will help anyone else out there if they have similar issues. It appears to be a very rare issue.

Off to the repair pool the camera goes again. Hopefully, Canon will pay for shipping this round. 38 bucks to ship gets to be expensive over and over.

Thanks for the replies.

That sucks. I've never seen that with mine but I would certainly send it right to Canon if that problem did show up. Good luck!

Hi Image Editing OK
Help... I too have just now experienced this problem with my Canon Mark II 5D. as far as I know, this has happened to only on job~! The client, one year later is requesting help on the same issue you describe above. I do not have the RAW files, only the JPGS and wonder what you found to be the problem. When I read the image info, i see that you have a color profile space of sRGB. Did you purposely shoot it in that color space? I do not, but found that on the images affected, the color profile is indeed sRGB. Any help you can give me I would me more than grateful for your response.. I am going to have to take over 100 images and further do pp on them.. This is going to take forever. It is a wedding. The lighting was perfect as with your images above .. HELP..
