I have a guy who wants me to take photos of his church and put together a postcard that they can use to send out to visitors with information about their church.

He'd like me to go to the church one morning to get photos of some stain-glass windows they have, and of their church building...then kinda combine the photos in photoshop to make a neat looking postcard.

I'm all for doing it, and I'm sure I can do what he wants...I'm just a little baffled as to what to charge for this thing.

He wants me to give him the JPEG file so he can take it to a printer and get it printed as many times as they might need.

I'm guessing this will probably take 2-3 hours, photo taking and ps included.

Any suggestions on what to charge?

as far as i know, churches are nonprofit. i can't imagine that they would pay that much. if it were me ... i would do it for $100/hr (2 hour minimum) and give him a CD with the images for $25 to $50.

you're looking at $225-$350 total.

When charging for a job, you need to cover your cost of doing business.

Even a nice guy non-profit price should cover your shooting time, post-processing, and design fee.

So you're not doing this gratis just to reserve your place in heaven then?? hehe

Actually, I'll be interested in what you finally decide on & the response from the church.

Yeah, well...I offered him $50 an hour, 2 hour minimum and he said that was higher than he had expected and he would have to check with the "church council" first.

I don’t know, I think that's pretty cheap...$100 for 25ish photos of your church and the digital artwork to create a nice looking postcard.

We'll see what he decides...if he says no, I'm not to worried...I'm having trouble scheduling all of my senior portraits this time of year, so that free Saturday will come in handy. ( I get an average of $300-$400 for those)

Shuttering, I think that's a wise and well considered choice. I expect he wants it free. I think $50-150/hr for a photographer that can do what you want is very reasonable, and considering he wants unlimited use of the image, your pricing is bargain basement. A church may be non-profit, but I'll bet the minister/pastor gets paid.

im a pastor, sounds like this man is either hog tied or doesnt want to/cant pay.. of course the postage and printing for sending the 1000's of cards out i cant see the your price being a huge hinderance.
i personally have a set $$ limit i can make business decisions for and have only had ONE instance where i needed to consult my board and it was certainly much much more than 200.00
if you feel impressed to help you can do it for a charitable contribution for your taxes if not i dont feel your charging too much remind the gentleman that the bible says a laborer is worthy of his hire, he will probably understand that

*** I don't know why my response disappeared, I KNOW that I answered this post. Must be one more of the glitches that has been plaguing the board. As it turns out, though, I do all my typing in Wordperfect (for the Spell Check) then cut & paste into here. Since I had not closed WP, I am able to repost my response - so here it is. NOTE TO MODS - has anyone else had posts vanish? ***

Post Cards. OK, according to Fotoquote (external link) if you have one photo taking up the entire post card, the average rate is $481.00 for a run of less than 1000 for a one year licence. For partial images it is $275 per image.

1000 to 5000 is $561 and $320.

5000 to 10,000 is $640 and $365.

For information on more than 10,000, I recommend that you buy Fotoquote - it is a great asset.

As far as the licence goes, never, never, never, NEVER give up the rights to your images. Licence their use for a specific time. If they want to continue using them after the first year, they should renew the licence.

In my case I do a lot of photos for our church. I just charge for processing prints. Sort of my "ministry". But I am also a site contractor - paving parking lots and such. I had a church with a budgeted amount 10% less than the total price for the job. I charged them 25% more than my bid would be for the work. Along with the invoice I sent a donation check for the differenceo of my charges less their budget amount. I wrote off the donation, made them happy, kept everything legal, and I figure I still "made a profit".

Edits welcomed, please post what you did.
