I didn't know you were a Va. boy for a time.

I also lived in Virginia for most of a year while I was in the Navy. I was stationed in Norfolk.

After that I was transferred to Orlando, FL, but I got to spend a couple weeks at home first. The first time I said "Norfolk" within earshot of my mother she flew into a rage. I'd been there long enough to learn to pronounce it like the natives, but she thought I was intentionally saying it that way, goading her as if I were swearing or something. I honestly don't think she still believes that's how it's pronounced...

I hope you plan to come to D.C. for at least a few day trips. We have the National Zoo and the Air and Space museum. There is also the Baltimore aquarium. Diane knows how to get here, I have seen her do it.

I didn't know you were a Va. boy for a time.

Four years while my dad was stationed at the Naval Surface Weapons Lab at Dahlgren...

lol. so you keep me unblocked for coffee? That works?:lol: Maybe I should post a "hey, unblock me for coffee" thread.

I'm envious. I would love to head East. I would spend days in the natural history museum. I may never leave it actually. I know Dan would love to tour as many historical sites as possible.

I'd love to make it to Gettysburg while we're there, but I don't know if we're going to have the time to do everything we'd like to do.

*crosses fingers, toes, shins, dogs, pretzels cat...*
and I SO want to go to Y but I have no idea how my life will be at that point.

It would be nice if you guys could make that trip. We're sure going to try...

I never though about that, Lonnie....since we have plenty of counties in England named similarly like that in pronunciation...

Still cracks me up, when people pronounce places like Warwick over here...and Gloucester....they don't try to say Worcestershire though ;)

I think I have mentioned Leyla worked through Natural History for years while she got her masters. We used to wander behind the scenes and open all the millions of little drawers and boxes of collections not on display. Only a tiny bit of what the Smithsonian owns is ever on display. I know a lot has been moved to the big archive places they have but I always found it sad to see someones old research just stuffed in a hall behind the scenes. I remember a case of little drawers with hundreds of birds collected somewhere in the 1930s just pushed aside.

Four years while my dad was stationed at the Naval Surface Weapons Lab at Dahlgren...

Neat. We had a Navy Surface Weapons lab just about 4 miles from here in White Oak. One of the bunkers blew up about 10 years or so ago and people felt it for miles. The closed the facility and have made it something else.
