I will be buying a canon XS this weekend. The camera comes in a bundle which includes the case, and a 2gb memory card, but I don't think 2gb is big enough. What is the best memory card (speed, size, etc.) to buy?

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!!!

"best" is always subjective opinon...and varies by the critera each person has in mind.

We mainly use Sanddisk Extreme 60MB (speed) 16GB (capacity) cards. They are UDMA compliant which important for fast writes if the camera supports UDMA and fast reads if the CF reader supports UDMA. For a CF reader on a laptop, would suggest the Lexar Pro Expresscard. I can get card reads twice as fast as with a UDMA reader on a USB 2 port.

Card speed is important if you are doing lots of fast shooting (sports, wildlife..etc) or just want to download lots of photos.

So much of this goes back to what you shoot or plan to shoot.

Given the serious investment in camera bodies and lenses, I would suggest that the place to go cheap is NOT on the media. ;)

Buy the fastest card you can afford.
Buy from a brand like Lexmar or Sanddisk.

I shoot a sanddisk. Like the one listed above, but only 8GB.
Pretty good.

I have two Sandisk Ultra II 4GB SDHC cards for my RebelXS. If I were to go on any vacation, I'd probably pick up another.

You could buy Compact Flash cards like the ones suggested, but you will need to heavily modify their shape to fit into the SHDC card slot on the Rebel XS. At that point, they probably won't work.

I used a Patriot 8Gb SDHC card on XSi/XT with no issues or lag. Bought it through special (deals2buy) for $16 I believe. That was 2.5years ago :)
