People keep bringing this up. Can someone define the term for me?

You magnify the images in your computer until pixels are as big as your thumb. Then you are pixel peeping. ;)

People often do this with with new cameras and lenses to try to convince themselves that spending all the money was worth it.

You could look at a photo like this (how someone normally would):

or like this(like a pixel peeper):

And then obsessing over every bit of noise or "softness", asking if there's something wrong with your sensor or if you got a bad copy of an L lens, all while overlooking the fact that even a poster sized print will still look awesome.

Viewing your photos at 100% or greater trying to find the most minute flaws produced by your equipment or by your own doing.

After a while you get over it or you go mad and foam at the mouth.

The cure for it like most other things is whiskey and lots of it.

It's only useful if you are a heavy cropper. But then you really should be working on your composition, using the right lens for the job or getting closer if you can. Not always possible of course and sometimes you have to crop and that's when you start pixel peeing and noticing the limitations of your sensor/lens combination.

This one, except the booze is wrong.

Yeah, the whisky just makes it look a whole lot fuzzier

Pixel peeping is like trying to critique the Mona Lisa by only viewing 10 square millimeters of the entire artwork..
