I hope this question is in the proper section as I am still new to this forum. Ok, who has set up a photo studio in the home, maybe in a spare bedroom or basement? I would be using it for a combination of different types of photography.....floral, artistic, and some portrait. Maybe those of you who have done this can give me some info on lights, backdrops, etc. Right now I do most of my photography outdoors and I am looking at setting something up inside. Thanks.

Dave,, you can do this quite cheaply.. A couple of Speedlites, umbrellas, stands and RF-602 triggers/receivers..

Get a Savage background stand and black and white seamless paper rolls. Then get just a single light, lightstand, and a large reflector, reflector holder + lightstand (or you can use a tripod).

Learn with one light first, I think you can do a lot of things with this setup. I had a single light setup for a few years and people wouldn't believe my shots were taken with a single light.

About the light, Alien Bees are ok, I don't use them anymore coz they are just not consistent enough for my work (you don't want to go into 1k+ frames and manually adjust color temp). You can probably pickup a B800 off Craigslist for cheap, I'd go with that, and you can sell it back later when you upgrade to something better. Also, if you don't plan to shoot a lot, you can always rent the lights and modifiers, it's amazingly cheap to rent Profoto gears vs buying them.

Thank you both for your responses. Going to start looking into these options and products.

My wife was always wanting to try different paint techniques throughout our house, and I was always trying to be conservative. I didn't restrict her to "rental house white", but I had a dim view of the sponged on textures and clouds on sky effects she wanted to try. Now every room in the house has a wall with some kind of mottled finish, and they make great backdrops. As long as I get a white ceiling for reflecting the flash, I am happy.
I don't do portraits professionally, but I did save alot of kids some money getting them decent submissions for the high school yearbook. I leave the senior portraits to the pros and they battle it out between themselves. Hoo-Boy, there sure are alot of photography studios and a limited number of graduating seniors, it's getting pretty cut throat and I don't care to stick my neck out.

I live in an apt, about 700 sq. ft, I have part of my living room that I use to do shoots. Equipment-wise I have backdrop stands, a few rolls of 12ft wide seamless paper,4 x8 ft of 3/4 MDF wood, 2 Alien Bee 800's, wireless triggers, octaboxes, and softboxes..... so far so good. The MDF makes a perfect floor for the paper and people to stand on, I actually had my motorcycle sitting on it in the middle of winter. The wireless triggers are perfect, I can move around freely without tripping over sync cords or having them pull out of the socket on the camera.
