Have an old Wolverine storage unit I used when we went to Alaska to store photos off my memory cards. It worked fine back then, but it's only 40 GB and certainly won't provide me with much for RAW files from a 7D! (We're going to the National Parks in Utah and also Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons for 2 weeks.) Should I just bite the bullet and get a laptop or will a larger Wolverine be sufficient?

If a laptop, what kind should I get?

Manfrotto carbon fiber tripod, 2 monopods, Manfrotto ballhead and pistol grip tripod heads.

That's what I plan to do just to be safe. (I do both here at home.) External hard drives aren't that expensive, even the portable ones. Is a netbook capable of burning discs? I haven't looked at anything besides regular laptops.

Netbooks don't have a CD/DVD drive. You'd have to connect an external one to a USB port. I have the one linked below and have used it on several systems without any problems.

Didn't think those small units would have a burner with them, but what you're using plus an external hard drive sounds like the way to go. Any particular netbook you guys would recommend? Thanks a lot for your input. (I just got my old 40 GB Wolverine out and realized that was never going to work with a bunch of 7D RAW files!) Also, I'd like to be able to take a look at what I've shot during the day on a little larger screen than the camera's.

After having done a substantial research, I ended up going with this netbook (mainly for its longer battery life):

I also replaced the 1gb memory that came with the netbook with this one:

Very happy with my choice -- so far...

either use a desktop with RAID 1 drives, or a NAS with RAID 1 drives. Use the laptop to move the files from the cards to hard drives....which are later moved to desktop or NAS storage.

Have exactly FIVE external hard drives at this point.(All labeled as MUSIC, RAW FILES, and PROCESSED PHOTOS.) I may be headed to something like that pretty soon. The drives are clustered around my feet under my desktop at this time! Between photos and music, I need a LOT of storage even though my computer has a 750 GB HD of its own!

In other words, I have a LOT of stuff! That's not even counting the DVDs and CDS that serve as another source of backup!

While traveling I use a netbook, and have one of the newer Asus, with over a 10 hr battery life. Great for long plane rides. As above, netbooks do not have DVD/CD players or burners. You have to use an external. I tend to carry multiple flash cards for the trip. And rotate thier use. That way if one were to go bad, between the netbook and memory cards, I have never lost photos.
The downside of netbooks is that there is weak processor power, and it is next to impossible to post process photos.
