The downside of netbooks is that there is weak processor power, and it is next to impossible to post process photos.

I've been in the market for 3 lb range netbook for a while now and looking at the 11 and 12 inch models for the slightly higher screen resolution. The higher end models (upper $400 to high $500's) include dual core processors and with Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit installed it's possible to do some degree of PP since some models can be upgraded 4 gigs of RAM. On the down side, a more powerful netbook chews up the battery power (~3 hrs on a 6 cell?) faster so there's a trade off.

AMD came out with the Athlon Neo X2 L335 (dual core) which I saw in an MSI and Lenovo. There's also a few models by other manufacturers that uses the Intel dual core. You can also upgrade the hard drive in netbooks to 7200 rpm if you prefer the extra speed over a 5400.

Have an old Wolverine storage unit I used when we went to Alaska to store photos off my memory cards. It worked fine back then, but it's only 40 GB and certainly won't provide me with much for RAW files from a 7D! (We're going to the National Parks in Utah and also Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons for 2 weeks.) Should I just bite the bullet and get a laptop or will a larger Wolverine be sufficient?

If a laptop, what kind should I get?

For travel either a netbook or a PSD - but the best solution is one of each. I like to have at least two copies of my images while I'm away. Using a netbook with an external drive isn't viable as a dual solution - if the netbook dies then you can't use the external drive and you have no backup solution left.

I use an Asus netbook plus a Hyperdrive Colorspace UDMA (with a 320 GB drive I installed myself). Both easily have enough capacity, very long battery life (over 8 hours each) and both can function independantly - so I'm not stuffed if one or t'other fails. Together they probably weigh less than a larger laptop.

I actually make three copies of each image. My friend also uses a Hyperdrive and she copies her images to mine while I copy mine to hers. But that's probably overkill. Just once in a while I'll use the netbook to copy really special shots to a 16GB SD card - but that's just paranoia.

I do no processing while away, maybe just a bit of culling of duds. (I'm on holiday - why would I want to sit in front of a computer screen when there's a few beers calling me from the bar?)

really, most netbooks are pretty similar so you cant really go wrong with either.
i have a 10in that has a comfortable keyboard. its by acer.
asus i've heard are good too.

I have an Acer 10", upgraded to 2 GB RAM and 500 GB HDD, but IMO the Toshiba has a better screen.

The larger screens give you a bit more capability, such as being able to run Canon's software natively. If an inch or so in size doesn't matter to you, I'd say that's the way to go.
