People 'round these parts will tell you to go Opteka. I just purchased mine on Amazon along w/ two batteries for $65 from 47th St. Photo or something

Don't want to start a new thread, so asking here. Are there dummy battery grips available? As in, I just need the grip for ergonomic purpose and not added battery life. So looking for something cheap.

Just remember, you get what you pay for. I am not saying go for the most expensive grip, but I shopped around and got my grip used for $30. A third party grip is nice and everything, but I would do a lot of research before investing.

The grip will need at least one battery in it for the camera to function.

Seems to be the OEM or Canon-esque feel to the Opteka ones that everyone raves about.

Mine should be here tomorrow :D

Well, I got a cheapie Meike from another user on this forum, and this is my 2nd grip (first was for 7d). It has the same looks and feel as the Zeikos. I've held both side-by-side, and it's exactly the same thing. So why pay somebody $120 when you can get it for $70 shipped???

I wonder why people need grip with Rebel.. The reason I like Rebel is because of it's compact size.

Well, when I had a Rebel, I was really in need for a grip for 2 reasons: the camera didn't fit right in my hand, and to better balance a heavy lens. I mean my Tamron 28-75mm :) was a heavy lens on XSi!! Imagine if I had a "brick" 24-70 on it, or even worse: 70-200 f/2.8xx ? It's much easier to balance a gripped body vs non-gripped.
But I agree with waterman, the only thing is: you can always take a grip off if you want to travel light.

in case it wasn't clear, grips can run off of 1 or 2 batteries. the grip's contacts run into the camera's regular battery compartment. so you don't put a battery in the camera when you use a grip. if you just want it for ergonomics, get a cheap one and you can use your 1 battery to power the camera.

i don't have huge hands, but have you ever used an xti? i run out of pinky space on it. my xsi, feels more comfortable for some reason. i'm not sure if it's larger or what. my fingers definitely cramp after hand holding the camera without a grip.

Yes, and I am considering getting a T2i. I have a 5D and at times, I wish it were smaller.. I gues to each his/her own.. I like smaller cameras. I like the size of a Leica camera, I just don't like their prices..
