why does my site look different in safari vs. ie?

I just started my personal site (not for business), but when I look at it in Safari it looks slightly different than in IE? Any thoughts?

We would need a link to it to see for sure.

I'll guess blind, though. You've developed your site for IE's "compatibility mode", which, while "compatible" with other versions of IE, is not compatible with most any other browser. But of course that's just a guess.

Sorry forgot to add it, and no judging. I only spent about an hour setting up and it is no where from being done.

With that said,

The only visual difference I see on the home page is that the thumbnail reflections aren't working at the bottom of the page in Safari - is that the issue?

There are two things, first is the reflection. The most annoying this my logo, on one it above the line and in ie it pushes the line over instead of being above it. What do you think of the layout? I went for a very minimalist clean feel?

The logo looks the same to me (on Safari 5.0 and IE8). The thumbnails on the bottom might be having trouble because of your extra quote in the string 'Storm's coming' - you can't use the same apostrophe for the quote character and the apostrophe. Make the outer quotes double quotes ("). That may or may not have anything to do with the reflections not working.

You might also take a look at what the validator says, fixing some of those could have some impact too.

The site's ok, though I would get rid of all the stuff below the photo on the home page. Why have those thumbnails at all? Why have a special "email me about this" button? And I don't happen to use slideshows, but I could be in the minority.

You guys have looser definitions of what "looking the same on every browser" would be than I do. Have you looked at his site in Opera and IE?
