I saw this out my bedroom window today. Technically, this photo is horrible. I just grabbed the camera to take a few photos for id purposes. This guy was in my yard a few weeks ago but took off before my camera was set up :(

It looks like a Pine Warbler???? I'm in Southern Ontario.

I've just uploaded it. I'm a bit of a rookie when it comes to resizing and loading :)

Female Baltimore Oriole. Put some cheap grape jelly out in a shallow dish and they will hang around all summer. They don't eat seeds, so jelly and sometimes orange slices and sugar water is all they really like.

It does match the picture but it was picking seeds from the coneflower.

It was very curious about the hummingbird feeder though LOL. It was sitting on top trying to figure it out.

Thanks so much. I just planted a new garden which is butterfly/bird friendly and the variety of birds and butterflies is surprising. Plant it and they will come :)

They make Oriole feeders that hold the same thing hummers like, a mixture of 1 part sugar to 4 parts water, microwave to a boil and let it cool, then put it in the feeder. Unless you get a big hummer feeder with perches built in, the other kind are too small.

They also sell jar lids for feeding grape jelly, but please, never buy one, and tell the store to not sell them. When the jelly level goes down, the birds reach further in and eventually get trapped and die in the jelly by drowning. Also, never, ever mix honey with water and sugar for the hummers or orioles. Honey has been shown to cause cancer in their tongues and beaks. :(

awesome, thanks Mitch. I'm going to work on some oriole '"food" in the next day or so.

I'm astounded that adding about 20 plants to the yard has attracted so much.

Plant some sunflowers next year, or just let the new ones come up from dropped seeds under the feeders. They make excellent props for the birds to land on, and Goldfinches just love them. :)

I have a feeder with Nyger and the goldfinches are always on them :) They like to sit on the purple cone flowers and pick the seeds too. I also have some giant autumn yellow coneflowers starting to blossom. They are about 5' tall. I saw some immature cardinals this morning sitting on the fence too. Grey and red speckled bellies.

I may set up shop outside this week and play in the yard by myself. This photo was taken from my bedroom behind the double paned, not so clean glass using the settings from yesterday LOL.

My Goldfinches love the nyger seed early in spring and summer, but about July, they seem to ignore it and go for sunflower seeds. Then when the plants start maturing, they go for nothing but the live plants.

The colors of the bird, the sunflower and the background all compliment that image. The sunflowers make the shot so much better. At end of summer, when the warblers start migrating back South, the sunflowers have colonies of aphids and other bugs on them that feed the warblers, and keep them around the yard for a few extra weeks, and hundreds of shots. ;)
