Or at least this has been my experience so far with the 3-stop soft-step grad from Singh-Ray. Here are a couple of shots taken with the EOS 7D and 24-105mm L lens.

Without filter at 1/30 f/11:

With filter (4x6 inch holded in front of the lens) at 1/15 f/11:

The filter managed to hold back the sky highlights but it clearly introduced a red cast over the image. BTW, the same settings (WB, etc.) were applied to both images. Is this normal for an ND grad?

It is normal in that most ND grads have casts, you have to find the brand/model that works for you. Though tbh I thought that Singh-Ray were the RR of filters so it is a bit of a suprise. The results aren't that offensive though are they? They scene looks rather red anyway. Have you tried shooting against a white ceiling or wall as a test?

I am currently using Lee resin grads. They have a subtle blue/grey cast which I find acceptable against sky.

There can be 'copy variation' in ND grads also. I had very purple results with hitech grads. Others have had no problem with them.

That's strange....
I am "new" to S-R filters, but I have not experienced any issues like that with color cast. In fact, quite the contrary...no color casts with similar (sunset on water) scenes.
I'm wondering...how was your White Balance set up? Did you use auto or a fixed (daylight) temperature?
Also, it looks like you've got a tint on much of the entire image....where did you have the filter placed in the scene?

(You also might want to give S-R a call....they were quite helpful when I spoke with them a couple of times.)

That doesn't even look like a color cast, just more saturation from underexposure to me, which is what you want, right? =\

Yeah, I am also a bit confused about this. The red cast is all over, but I held the filter clearly over the upper part of the image. May be even the clear part of the filter affects the color balance. I will email S-R.

I don't think it is additional saturation. At least it can not be corrected by desaturating. But it can be corrected by adjusting the tint (less purple, more green). Here is a version of the photograph taken with the filter after adjusting Tint and Fill Light in CameraRaw. It begins to look like the shot taken without filter. Or?

I find that the SR adds character to your photo by warming it up. In other cases it might not be good, but in your current case, I think it works.

Is SR a glass or resin filter?

SR is resin.

Agree. Just surprised that it introduces tint to the capture. It is not glass, it feels plastic.

I've been using SR filters for a while now and the slight color cast doesn't bug me. If you were using Cokin which has a unnatural blue or magenta cast, you would be complaining even more. :) Just sayin'.:)

You should check out Adam Barker's website. He uses a ton of Singh Ray and has stunning images to go along with it. :)

Please let us know what they say. I'm quite curious.
(They were quite supportive and available when I contacted them with questions via e-mail. I also called once.)

I'm gonna post some samples just to show that I haven't had any issues with my filters.

Steve L. asked a very important question for which I have not seen your answer. Did you use auto white balance? Are you shooting raw or JPG?

Always raw. WB set to cloudy.

Awesome captures Julian! Hard to see the full effect of the filter without a before/after comparison though. I am not complaining. Just surprised by the color effect of the filter. Had I not done the test, I might not have noticed it...
