Yesterday, I was on a shoot, and my 5D went sideways in my viewfinder. The mirror came off (adhesive problem). Luckily, I had my other camera and finished the job. I emailed Canon Service this morning for some advice (send them the body/take it to a local camera shop/etc). Within an hour, Larry from Canon contacted me. Got some info, and stated that he would send me a shipping box to send it to NJ. Canon would fix it for free/pay shipping/insurance/etc, even though it is the 5D, not the 5DMII, and return it to me as soon as possible. Apparently, this is known 'concern' with the original 5D. Some times we hear horror stories about HW problems, but this one should have a happy ending. Was afraid that I would have to shell out hundreds of dollars for repairs. Just wanted to say 'thanks' to the Canon Customer Service rep working today.

The 5D Classic mirror problem is pretty well documented. Any Google would show it up. Have you had it a while?

On POTN and other sites as well as Canon 5D sites its been posted many times.

Canon sometimes even fixes the mirror problem before it breaks, when you buy the camera (like they did for me) free of charge.

I'm surprised theres any Canon 5D shooter that hasn't heard of it.

Canon issued a 5D recall notice for that flaw almost a year and a half ago (Feb., 2009).

Gentlemen. Thank you for your response. I now remember that there was a 5D mirror 'concern', a year or so ago. I thought that if I had a 'recall' camera, Canon would contact me. I was never contacted, so I 'assumed' that I did not have a problem camera., and forgot about it. Thanks for jogging my memory. The body has been shipped back to Canon for repair. I know now that I need to check all of the forums for Canon notices/recalls/etc, and retain them. thanks again. NickS.
