Jul 25, 2010 19:27 | #1 Made some time for photos today, there is a grassy area not too far away where dickcissels hang out, but instead I found a grasshopper sparrow:  This afternoon in my yard I set up near some flowers that the hummingbirds like to visit. I used my 500mm and a 25mm extension tube to get the nice shallow DOF. The flower here is royal catchfly, and blurred in the background is wild bergamot (both native species I've planted in the garden.)  -Liz

Thanks. I've read that hummingbirds don't necessary care about the color of the flower, but from what I've seen they really gravitate toward the royal catchfly and cardinal flower, both a vivid red color, as well as the bee balm, which is a red monarda (Monarda didyama). I don't see them visit the wild bergamot (Monarda fistulosa) too often, which I have a ton of, and is a lavender color as seen in the background of the photo. Seems like when they have the choice, they definitely go for the red. -Liz

I heard about the dickcissels and grasshopper sparrows through some birders, and they happen to be right across the river from me. And of course anything good in my back yard is always a bonus. -Liz
