am i the only one that feels the tripod mount on my dslr is not engineered to be load bearing? and am i the only one who cant bare the thought of having the mounting screw come loose?

well i checked out a whole bunch of diy articles and decided to make my own.

here it is at a grand total of about $25
edit: my math isnt so great lol

redhead rifle sling $19
nite ize s biner $3 (75lb weight limit)
paracord 100ft $10 on ebay
o ring - lowe's $.50

here is a picture of the sling setup

here is a picture of the prototype mounting thing

i want to replace that nylon piece with a piece of paracord.

i do have a question, should i eliminate the key ring when i replace the nylon with paracord or should i leave it on, pros cons?

what do you think?

it is very comfortable!
it works well so far but i trust paracord over that nylon piece, so i have to change it or i wont be able to sleep at night.

it looks a bit cumbersome to use.
take a look at the luma loop.
its very similar to the r-strap, and they use a lanyard loop to attach to the camera.
its similar to the optech pro-loop connection, but with a sling style trap.
i think optech recently came out with a sling kind of adapter.

the lanyard is cool but i dont trust the buckles, id rather have a lanyard made completely of paracord connected to the oring i have. it functions quite fine though it needs some tweaking and aesthetic work.

You raise a good question. Perhaps there is another solution. (I already have an RStrap)

It would be easy to have a "safety strap" with a length of paracord through an eyelet on the camera, and around the sling strap. In case the fastener does get loose. My grip on my D80 came loose; that prevented me from using the camera until I figured it out. That fastener was loose but not off.

Conversation here has me more concerned about the clip on my RStrap--I have the curved pad, whatever that is (RS5?) and it has a clip high on the back side. That allowed me to mount my Joey pouch, but if I leave that there, so I don't need the clip anymore.

I have a "Gordy strap" for my G11. I could use that instead on the dslr as a safety strap, through the eyelet, and put the strap through the opening for my wrist. No knots. ;) However, it would be less convenient to use.

Has the fastener on the RStrap been changed? Store told me so when I commented on fasteners coming loose.

Because of the grip issue I described above, I check the fastener every time I pick up my camera.

There's risks in whatever we do. Do we trust RStrap to properly design the fastener?

I just got the RS-7 (curved strap/no pockets on pad). The connector has a rubber washer and it seems to be in there pretty tight. For added peace of mind, I suppose I could run some kind of strap from the loop in the connector to one of the camera strap eyelets, so if the connector falls out of the tripod socket, there's a strap to keep the camera from falling down. It'd probably be a pretty clean mod if you used a short enough cord.

I'm not worried about my R-Strap. I've done a lot of research before I bought mine and I haven't read of a single instance of the strap failing. I'm thinking that if ONE user of the R-Strap had a failure, we'd hear all about it!

Aaargh, I just can't find the article I'd like to. What it showed was that the tripod-socket is stronger than the flimsy camera-strap-holder-thingys by a long shot. Showed a camera that was taken apart to reveal how it was put together, and it was a very reassuring construction.

It's understandable that you worry it might come loose, but I assume that the new FastenR 3 is better than its predecessors, and that you actually are safe. Even if you don't feel so. Now how to get that safe feeling...

Jonta, I think that video is on the RapidStrap site. I was there this morning and saw the link, but couldn't open it here.

edit: go to the buzz section and scroll way, way down. Here's a clip from there....

"Weekly Photo Tips Addresses R-Strap and Tripod Mount
Scott Eccleston over at weeklyphototips.blogspot.com talks about tripod mount strength and shows us a couple dismembered cameras. Very interesting. Thanks Scott!" from the rapidstrap site...

I have a Flashboint (Meinke) grip for my 7D, and I don't think that I'd be all that comfortable carrying that by the tripod socket as the Flashpoint grip is made of plastic and when you take out the batteries, you can see the back side of the tripod mount. Without the grip, I feel quite comfortable with my R-Strap.

Actually when i went to the Scott Kelby Photowalk this past weekend. I met a local photographer with a R-Strap. I asked her how she liked it and all.. But loves the strap but hates the mounting mechanism. The thing unscrew itself very often and it caused her camera and lens to drop once. Her body was beat up pretty bad.. but luckily her glass was okay.

She now frequently checks the mounting thing to make sure it's tight.

What fastenR was she using the one with the rubber washer (R2) or the latest streamline version (R3). I've heard of unscrewing problems with the very first fastenR design but not with the latest 2 models.
