I'm going backpacking for 18 days and need to fit everything in my carry on! Leaving this Friday! Please help!

I'm planning on bringing my 7d, canon 28-135mm kit lens, sigma 10-20mm, and canon 50mm 1.8f along with 430II EX and would like to fit this all in perhaps the CU... I want to have either the 28-135mm or 10-20mm mounted on the lens when in the bag. I also have a Velbon ultra luxi L travel tripod that's about 15in long and just under 3 lb.

Tripod has a small carry case that I could carry on as personal item. I can strap it on the side using the water bottle holder and bungee to a strap on side for walking about. I was thinking I could maybe pack my camera gear in the CU in my carry on backpack with my minimal clothes around it as extra padding (no checked bags remember). We do not want to check any bags and my goal is to be able to travel with just one bag etc... My neck/shoulders get sore too. So I was thinking the CU would be great and not be too bulky if I did have my backpack on back and the cu in front when needing to walk about in-between city's carrying all our stuff with us for the day if needed and still manage to take pictures and not over burden myself and enjoy my first trip to Europe. I got the eBags Mother Lode TLS Weekender Convertible for my main backpack before getting all my gear for my 7D. We are on a budget and the cu is already more then what we want to spend. The CU seems to have some good reviews and I like the cross strap with waist/hip support.

I tried the lowepro Inverse 200 AW but it was too bulky feeling, sagged and the strap to add stability across the body was too long even when shortened all the way... I'm about 5'6, 122 lb. if the strap was about 3 in. shorter it may have helped... but there's a lot of weight in that waist pack ant it pulls away from the body and the waist buckle unsnapped when testing it out at home. Not a good sign. I have not tried the CU yet but think the camera store here has it.

SO What would you suggest Please help I'm leaving in 4days! Yikes! and Yea! Thanks so much in advance! :D

Have you considered a belt and pouch system such as the Think Tank Skin Set or Modular pouch system? Lowepro also do a similar system. You only need to load up what you want and, with the Skin Set, the pouches collapse to nothing when you remove a lens/flash etc..

the modular pouch system would be great to use, but i think he'll have a problem with his tripod unless he doesnt mind holding it or buying a bag/strap for the tripod and sling it over his shoulder while the modular system is on his waist. :)

however, if A.gilly is decided on a waistpack, Think Tank and CLik Elite has some nice belt packs. :)

I too would suggest thinktank. Maybe a digital holster 20 with a few pouches ( skin are really light ) and a belt. Next time I travel this is what I am going with.

I would suggest the Mountiansmith Photo Tour or Day waist packs. These can be used either as shoulder or waist packs. I have both of these bags and can easily recommend them. Both of the pack will hold your equipment list, as mine will hold 40D w/battery grip, 70~200 2.8, 10~22, 17~552.8, 580EX flashalong with a spare batteries and stuff. I will carry a tripod or mono-pod in the straps under the pack.

The Day is a little bigger but the Tour will still work but tighter. The following is an example of the Day with some of the stuff I carry in it (this is not current of the equipment carried).

I use the bag for shooting Mtn. biking races and am wearing it for at least four to six hours at a time with consistent movement over rough ground. With the Waist Belt secured, the pack is snug and easy to carry. I have a very bad shoulder (bike crash) which prevents the long term use of shoulder mounted backpack, so the waist packs work very well.

The pack comes with a single shoulder strap and has a optional dual shoulder harness (which I use). Either will support of the pack while walking and allow un-fasting the belt to get to equipment without stopping.

I have not had any quality issues with the bag (no bad seams or weak zippers). The only wish would be for the velcro siding to go father up the walls of the bag for more options with the dividers (but it seems to work as is). I have had a few Mountainsmith bags over time and have not been disappointed in the bags.

While the Photo Day is no longer made, you still can find it around. The Photo Tour is current and should not be a problem.

If you have an further questions, please feel free to contact me.

Regards
Rick

Thank you so much everyone for replying! I tried out a few of the think tanks yesterday and then today they got the change up in and I am very pleased with the slim profile and my stuff does fit with the flash in the side pocket which matches the flashes height. I haven't had a chance to try out the different strap configurations besides the side strap with waist belt. I'm have a lender waist and it can be tighten and then some. I checked out the mountain smith online but they didn't have anywhere near that has them and I'm leaving in a few days... I thought I would have found the bag a little sooner but I'm sure everyone can relate to the search for the perfect bag. I also like the belt system idea yet didn't want my photo gear to be easily identified as such. I do have a bag that has a shoulder strap that came with the tripod... no padding but I do have a slip on shoulder strap pad that wraps around and velcros shut from my other camera bag, the lowepro passport sling. I would like to figure out a way to have it attach to maybe one to the cross the body straps in the back so that it doesn't swing forward and get in the way. Perhaps a bungee cord or something... If anyone has some ideas I'm all ears AND eyes! the simple bag for the tripod isn't padded nor does it have any loops but it dose have about a 24in strap. Thank you again for all of your thoughtful and helpful comments!
