Here's the deal, my friend just started up a small marketing company for up-and-coming artists at local clubs in NYC, called Fresh Mango Productions. I would give a website, but they're currently building it now. In early September, they will be hosting their first guest, and they want me to have a little setup outside the club, where there will be a backdrop and such, made to look like the red carpet. There, the artist and some "big" guests. My friend said it would be a good way to get my business out there, eve though I don't even operate out there at all. Do you guys think I should do it? I wouldn't be getting paid, he said that I would hand out my business cards, and maybe they would pay me for the pictures, which I highly doubt. But I thought it was their job to hand out my cards since they are having me do the pictures. Anyways, if the answer is yes to its worthiness, would my gear cut it for shooting? Would I need any stationary lights that would be tether to my camera, like portable studio lights?

I wouldn't do it for free, because you mentioned the words "marketing company" and because there is probably near zero value in the exposure for yourself. Honestly, I don't think I would even use this as a portfolio building gig, but maybe that is just me. It seems like you would either be underselling yourself or overselling yourself (depending on your experience/skill) with virtually no middle ground.

To answer the second part of your question: yes, you can get it done with the gear you have, but some sort off camera lighting would be preferable.

Yea, I guess marketing company might be too generous for their little gig. How about a bunch of college students trying to make it big in NYC? More power to them, I don't know how it's going to turn out though. Honestly for me, this type of photography isn't my thing, but it might be a good experience for me, but I doubt it; I have to see how it interferes with my schoolwork first, as does he. Thanks for the comments though bacchanal, you brought up some good points.

I agree with bacchanal. Portfolio wise an up and comer isn't going to do you much good unless they become a there and not leaving.

That's not a paparazzi type shoot. Paparazzi stalk, chase and harass their subjects.
