Well I'm nowhere near the caliber of most of you, but I try. Taken at 205mm with my Canon 100-300mm lens and shot in Joshua Tree NP. The moon was surprisingly big and orange when it first came up.

Thank you. These shots for me are still a work in progess. Shooting the moon is not easy to say the least.

I like it!

A lot of people believe because the Moon is so big and bright that it ought to be easy. But, like you, I too find it pretty difficult to get that perfect sharp focus and exposure, especially when you want to try and balance it against a foreground and background.

True, to me the moon by itself can be boring. But getting something else in the photo is TOUGH!

Great shot! I love the framing and the colours...well done. This is a little off-topic and certainly nothing to do with your skills...but that looks like quite a bit of CA around the bottom half of the moon...am I seeing that right?

Was that early in the evening? Moon low and big. What time did you shoot this one? ~9:00?

I like it. Thought about hoping in the car and driving to the field, but then I went into the house and logged onto this forum :)

CA usually manifests itself as violet fringing, What you could be seeing since it is red on the bottom limb might beAtmospheric Prismatic Dispersion (external link).

And here is a great example of it in this image of Venus.

This is especially common on bright objects when they are low in the sky.

Ah, interesting...thanks! Learn something new every day ;) I thought CA can also come out as orange-red fringing...

It can, but we tend to focus on what we perceive to be the brightest colors (at the red/yellow end) which leaves blue out of focus. If you focus on the blue, then the orange red is out of focus. If you get the chance to point a cheap, dept store refractor at Venus, run the focus in and out. It's quite surprising how far the red focus point can be from the blue in a simple lens.

Steve.
