I was up in the Mineral King National Park a few days ago. A truly beautiful area. I stopped at a vista point that looked out over the central San Joaquin valley where I live. The brown line toward the top of the photos is a visible line of smog. That is the stuff that we have to breathe daily.
Both were shot with my EF-S 17-85 IS, at 1/100 second.
#1~ 79mm at f/14
#2~ 17mm at F/11
Please excuse the sensor boogers. Needs cleaning after camping.

Shame that such a beautiful area has that problem. Good shot, Skip. (Tell Maureen that stuff may be affecting her blue sky photos.)

Joe, Sandy, Stan, thanks for commenting. The San Joaquin Valley forms a bowl and the smog spills in from the San Francisco and Sacramento areas then just packs up here with no outlet. Ugh! When it does clear out the view is spectacular. Unfortunately it won't really clear until some serious weather passes through. We are expected to hit a record number of 100+ days this weekend. Whew!
I have some shots down into the Kings Canyon which don't look so smoggy. I'll try to get them up tonight.

Sorry to disillusion you but the smog 'cause de jour' is dairy cows. They are being touted as the number one cause of green house gases in the valley. You people better get used to drinking your coffee black ;-)a

Yep, that's exactly what happens in Denver which is in kind of a bowl despite being a mile high. The smog sort of collects and forms a lid on the bowl. Yuch!!

Great shots skip.
