My first post!!! I was picking my buddies brain about this and he referred me to this forum.

So I'm upgrading from my Xti to a 40D. I found a local seller that has two bodies for sale and I'm trying to decide which one to buy. Seller says both bodies are in great shape, minimal wear and tear. The shutter actuations are the question now.

Body 1 - 30k actuations, original shutter (leaning towards this one)

Body 2 - Shutter replaced at 50k Actuations, 10K on the new shutter. 60K total on the body. It seems a bit low for having to be replaced, which worries me about the 30K body. The warranty provided the camera shop that did the repair was only 6 months, now expired.

Any advice?

Asking price for either body is $475.

With the 40D the shutter can go anywhere from 10,000 shots all the way over 100,000; it's impossible to tell. I'd go for number one.

I would go with the second one. Shutters can go at anytime with anybody even the 1D's. Since the second one just got the shutter replaced I would go with that one.

When I had my 30D the shutter went out at 56K before I had to replace it.

I would go with the first.

Who replaced the shutter? Did they do a good job? Do they have a good rep? (Did canon do it?)
What you need to see if the shop knows, if Canon replaced the shutter, then go with the second one.

Sellers say the shutter was replaced at "A1 Camera Repair", I'm trying to look up if they are a Canon Authorized Dealer or repair center but haven't had luck.

Sounds like the 2nd one is the favorite so far. I'm surprised that Canon shutters life can vary by so much!

either one is good. I would choose number one because who knows who did the repair and why it needed it pretty early. Anyway shutter replacements are pretty cheap like 250 so whatever happens you'll still get a good camera.

The price is good. I just bought a 40D for $600, but it was mint with only a few clicks. I would go with the second one if it was serviced by Canon, first one otherwise.

There's no expected life on shutter. Canon gives an approximate count but never an actual because like all mechanical objects they break down eventually. We just can't tell until it does break down or have signs of breaking down. There's just no way of figuring out when the shutter is going to go.

For example some of the 1D's. They're expected shutter count is 200K (1DMKII and below), some went out at 30K, others go more than 200K. There is even some that around 2-3x more than canon's expected life.

Six of one, half a dozen of the other.
based on what you've said, I'd go with the second one simply because of the new shutter but the difference between 10k and 30k is bugger all.
I've shot 20k frames in a weekend so in my world that can be only two or three days work.
If I missed out on the second one I'd be just as happy to settle for the first, especially if they were around similar money.

Hey guys, thanks for all the replies. So it sounds like you can never tell when a shutter might go bad...ranging from 10k to 100k. Considering the 2nd body has already experienced a shutter failure...the risk may be lower on the shutter that's already been serviced.

On the flip side...if early life failures are few and far between, then this the odds of this guy having two bodies with pre-mature shutter failures should be low, in which case the 1st body would be the better choice as it's an original shutter. Sorry to be devils advocate!
