Are the rumors of Einstein issues greatly exaggerated? Is there any summary of issues people were concerned with? Are they still shipping the original design or have they made some changes and are now shipping version "1.1"? I still can convert my pre-order but I have some lower powered strobes for now so I don't NEED the strobes right now and I'll be supremely aggravated if they are buggy.

No deal breakers for me but there are several anoying things.

If I read correctly on the AB Tech forums, they offered to upgrade all v1 hardware to v2 when it becomes available at no cost.

They also have a generous return policy - so no harm in trying them out for yourself.

That's the kind of thing I'm worried about. Is there any "official" guarantee?

I don't know if there is a written "guarantee" that they will upgrade for free, but if you know anything at all about Paul Buff, then you know his word is as good as being written in stone.

From his website(http://www.paulcbuff-techforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=717): (external link)

It is anticipated that Einstein units shipped after late August 2010 will be V2 versions, with all field issues include modeling lamp heating, PW issues and 220V issues corrected. All International Einstein sales will be V2.

Current Einstein owners will be offered a no-cost exchange for V2 when they are available. (Canadian customers should contact Customer Service for exchange details).

If you are on the pre-order list and prefer to wait for V2 we will be happy to maintain your position on the list and ship V2 as soon as they are available. Should you choose to do this, we will reward your patience and inconvenience with an $50 accessory credit at the time of shipment of V2. This offer only applies to domestic pre-orders because non-pre-orders will receive V2 automatically.

Man, I'm a tool. That is all included in my pre-order email. I just put in my order with the "hold" for v2. So I won't be charged until the v2 ships and I get the $50 discount, etc. so good deal all around.

I'm not a fanboy but I have to say I've been impressed with their customer service. They went above and beyond for me a couple of times for me recently.

They were as good as their word (better actually) with buying back AB800's that I purchased while waiting for the Einsteins.

I placed my order which will be shipped in late August or early September per the phone rep who was very polite and did a great job explaining everything. That's fine because as I indicated, I don't need the lights right now any way.

Here is the straight info: All Einsteins shipped to date will function on all voltages. However, we have found and corrected three separate issues which can compromise the performance in some usages. Redesign of all three issues has been done and we are in the process of making new tooling and circuit boards to implement these improvements.

Here are the issues:

1. Operation at 240VAC 50HZ at repeated rapid recycle rates has caused some field failures of one specific charging capacitor. This has been completely resolved and stress tested in the power supply redesign.

2. Operation at either 120 or 240VAC with the modeling lamp at full 250Watts, particularly with no reflector in place, has resulted in excess heat on the front mounting mechanism sufficient to deform the Lexan housing. A complete redesign of the front end mounting plate and cam assembly has been completed and new tooling and molds are in progress. These changes will completely eliminate this issue.

3. Issues of EMI radiation from one of the power supplies has compromised the performance of Pocket Wizards connected to Einstein. Current shipping Einsteins contains improvements in this issue, but the new power board design completely eliminates the issue.

Our anticipated date for production of Einstein units incorporating corrections for all issues above is late August 2010.

All current Einstein owners will be offered a no cost replacement once units with the above fixes are available.

It is my hope that customers will appreciate that the cost to me in quickly addressing these issues and assuring all customers end up with the best product we can possibly make is in the range of a $300,000 Einstein loss, rather than profit. We consider this an investment in the future and in customer good will.
