If you're going to look at the Joby gorillapods, don't even look at the SLR-Zoom, go for the Focus. Even though they don't work very well with longer lenses, they're good for wide-angle and standards. I have one, and it's fairly limited, but does the job when i need it,

I would personally go with a regular table top even. Manfrotto makes one. But I'd like to be able to use my regular ball head with it (Manfrotto 488RC2 + RRS)

The tripod folded is about 13 inches and my Manfrotto 488RC2 with RRS clamp is heavier that the tripod. It is pretty sweet, even comes with a bag. It is exactly what I wanted for travel.

I use the gorillapod focus. Small but very sturdy. 7D gripped with 24-105 on it most of the time but I have used it with the 70-200F2.8L IS. It also offers the option of locking it around just about any item you can wrap it aroung.

I'm using the Novoflex Basic Ball: http://www.bhphotovideo.com …REG/Novoflex_BB_BLAU.html (external link).

It's pricey and is only adjustable to three leg positions (i.e. heights) but it is Rock. Solid.
