Hi there, I ahve a particular situation and would appreciate some input on how to do this.

I have windows 7.
I want to plug in 2 separate external HDD via USB into the computer.

I want to save data into both the Ext HDD simultaneously, so that it is like a back up copy.

Right now all i can think of is to copy into Ext HDD1 and then Ext HDD 2 manually, like drag and drop it there. How can I make this more simple ?

Can I save it into extHDD1 and have a software or something automatically copy what i saved into extHDD1 into extHDD2 ? Or is this something I can do in Windows7. Is there even a name for this process of duplication? If you need some kind of software, what do you recommend?

Thanks much everyone

I think i replied to your other post but if you want to copy files to 2 hard drives at once you either need a RAID 1setup which basically writes data to both HD's simultaneously. or use software to copy from one HD to the other check out the software i gave you on your other post

Hi there ,
thanks so much for your insight.
Can I ask, say if I have 2 ext HDD drive all hooked up via USB into the computer,
and make changes to HDD1, will your software automatically also make changes to the HDD2 automatically, that way you have a mirror image of HDD1 ?
Thanks much

no problem. and no the software will not automatically do it, you will have to basically run it manually or setup a schedule for it to run - daily, monthly etc.

I don't think Windows can RAID on normal external drives. Either get one of those pricey external RAID cabinets, or stick the drives in to the case.

Or manually copy stuff over.

I use an external raid enclosure made by mediasonic w/ two 1tb HD's and it works great.

You can also set up a software RAID with two external drives using the OS.
WinXP refused to do this with USB drives though, but maybe Win7 will.

Or, you can simply use your back up program to write the data to both drives. Not exactly the same as RAID, but more flexible and will achieve similar results to what you want.

Look at "Mirror Folder",. it's a great back up app that also will set up "Software RAID" .
