Thank you all for your suggestions and guidence...

I tried one more time to download it directly from Canon, and followed the directions letter by letter.... once again without success...

I think, just to make sure every possibility is attempted, I'll buy / borrow a USB CF card reader and eliminiate the printer based CF Card reader as a cause.

If that doesn't work, I guess I'll be headed to Canon... which I am sorry to say is about 1.5 hours away...

Once I get it fixed, I'll let you all know what Canon says...

Again, thanks for the help...

Degar

Been away, sorry. One thing that occurs to me, it's not a documented issue, but is your CF card formatted FAT16 or FAT32? If it's FAT32, try with a FAT16-formatted card. There may be a glitch in the resident firmware update code when it comes to reading the different FAT tables.

Jon,

When I check the card, it doesn't show a format type. I am guessing this is because I formatted it using the 20D camera. Do you agree?

Do you think I should try and format the CF Card FAT16 and try the update again or should formatting it with the camera be good enough...

Thanks...

I always recommend to NEVER update the BIOS unless the BIOS update has a fix for a specific problem you are encountering. If you are having no problems and things are working fine - don't update. That's my advice.

As a firmware engineer, I would say always upgrade your firmware after a few other people have tried and made sure there is nothing obviously wrong with the update. There are always little fixes that silently get checked in. Modern firmware upgrades have ECC checking, so you're not ever going to get a half-done flash; it'll either be successful or tell you it failed, at which time you can try again. Upgrading your firmware really isn't all that risky.

Regardless of how you formatted it, if you look at the drive's properties (in Explorer, right-click on the drive and choose "Properties") in XP it'll show you the file system type. If it was FAT32, it'd say so. If you formatted it in the camera, I'd assume (without any particular basis for this, I'll admit) that the camera should be able to cope with a firmware upgrade from that file system type. Still and all, it might be worth formatting the CF in Windows (right-click, then "Format..." and tell it to do FAT16 (there's a drop-down box for it).

Seems like there's another step after inserting the card and if I remember right it didn't quite jive with the instructions. or something was out of order or something. It's been a while since I did it.

KAC

I keep reading the posts on people doing the updates. My camera is still at 1.0, I have been putting off doing the updates as I have read stories that if something goes wrong your camera could lock up.

Mine is working fine. What am I missing by not doing the updates? Can you go from 1.0 to the latest or do you have to take them one at time?

Anybody had any problems where the camera locked up or not longer functioned properly due to a problem with the update?

It's kind of like "If it's not broken don't fix it"

Yes, you can get from 1.0 to the latest, becuase the latest update ALLWAYS contains the changes from the previous updates.
This is also true for the whole computerindustrie where updates can be done.

The best thing to do is to allways install the latest updates because it mostly contains bugfixes and enhanchments
that are not documented. Good luck.

Q: What has been changed in version 2.0.2 of the firmware?
A: It includes the following additions/improvements:

  1. Fixes a bug that prevented the EOS Capture application from operating correctly when the camera's image quality setting is RAW+JPEG. This phenomenon only occurs in the Version 2.0.0 firmware.

Q: Are the previous versions of the firmware included in version 2.0.2? A: Yes, the following improvements from the previous version are included: Version 1.0.4/1.0.5 changes:

  1. Fixes the problem of shutter release not working.
  2. Improves reliability when using some CF cards.
  3. Improvements in the firmware update program itself.
Version 1.1.0 changes:

  1. Three new languages (Russian, Korean, and Traditional Chinese) have been added to the camera menus.

Three new languages have been added to the 12 current ones, for a total of 15 supported languages.

  1. The phenomenon of horizontal line noise appearing in images taken at high ISO settings while using the internal flash has been fixed.

The issue with horizontal line noise appearing in shots taken at high ISO settings (ISO800, ISO1600, etc.) while using the internal flash has been fixed.

Version 2.0.0 changes:

  1. Support for the wireless file transmitter WFT-E1.

This function works when the WFT-E1 firmware is 2.0.1 or later. (external link)

So there's stuff in the 1.x updates you can most likely use, even if you don't plan on getting the WFT-E1, and it's all in 2.02.
