Unless you use an extended batter NO laptop will allow you to do heavy work for 4-6 hours.

You need something greater than a 2GHz Core2Duo - that will suffice for the 5D MK II, I'm on a 2,5GHz Core2Duo.

Ideally you'd go for an i5 or i7 though => newer architecture.

If you can afford it, the Vaio Z is a great little choice - it has a pretty good screen too.

Ideally ask here for notebook question:

Z with an extended battery should do that - not sure about the normal one.
On the older SZ (which I have) I originally got 4,5hours out of 80%...

But on the small expensive side the Z is the only one that springs to mind - it has a pretty good screen too.

15in MacBook Pro! It will powerhouse through you're images, amazing high res screen and 8 hours of battery life. Well honestly you can get like 5-7.5 really using it.

Any of the MacBook Pros will serve your needs.

Sure you can. A MacBook Pro will go that long with a little to spare.

"Raw" is not an acronym, abbreviation, nor a proper noun; thus, it should not be in capital letters.

You won't get the advertised battery life out of any laptop - doesn't matter what name it has or whether it has an apple on it that's starting to rot.

Light usage - yes, Vaio Z - or the G series originally got even up to 10 hours - my SZ got 4-4,5 hours from an 80% charge when I still had my HDD (SSD needs less energy).

But NO laptop will get much more when used heavily as in Photo editing.

And my light use was generally web browsing - reading the news, some Excel, VBA script in Excel and word.

Sure you can from a MacBook Pro. It's been verified by many people, including AnandTech (external link). Apple advertises 8 hours and that's what you get, even a little more.

Photo editing isn't that taxing on batteries. You want to use a battery in a hurry, run any Flash animation. Flash junk is electric drain.

Ah the magic energy sucking properties of flash :rolleyes:

Battery consumption is dependent on power requirements of the hardware which is dependent on the processing requirements of the software.

Running a complex flash game on my PC cranks the CPU usage up to around 15%.
Editing photos easily takes it to 100%.

Guess which one is going to require the most power?

I get about 5-7 hrs of life out of my i7 MBP on average. Editing photos maybe 3.5 hrs unless I turn the brightness down. The problem is the video switching - it really sucks down the battery. Little flash games are not my problem. It's the movies that push the CPU up into the 40-60's most of the time.

There are not many PCs that get past 3 hrs and those that do are typically expensive or have extra large batteries that stick out in some way.

So true :)

I really wonder how someone can claim running a CPU at 100% (at least to "decode" the RAW) isn't taxing the computer.
If ruinning the CPU at 100% isn't what is?

my budget will be around 2000. i'd really like a mac because we have 4 of them at home right now, but some of the programs that i will be running for school will be windows only. i dont want have to bootcamp or run a VM all the time. i dont think its worth it.

thanks for all of the suggestions guys! i might go for a vaio F (the 16 inch one) with i7 quad, 8 gigs of ram and an ssd or an hp envy with the same config. still considering the MBPro, but i doubt that im going to get one. thanks!

The Vaios have become very nicely priced recently - at 2000$ also have a look at the Z - just a dual core i7, but at 13,1" and 1,43kg might be worth it :)
