I recently purchased a used 400 5.6 lens that did not have an owners manual and I am wondering if a manual was included with the lens from Canon when bought new? If so is it available to download somewhere on the internet?

I don't think any of my lenses have included much of a "manual." Brief instructions maybe, but if you bought a $1000+ lens and don't know what a manual focus switch does, I think you have bigger problems.

That being said, everything on the lens is pretty self-explanatory.

I'm trying to think back, but from memory all I've ever had with any of mine as far as I can remember is a rather pathetic scrunched up piece of paper

I think all my L lenses came with a small, nicely printed and illustrated handbook. Think the 50 f/1.4 and the TCs came with the folded, folded, folded, folded 26 language bed sheet.

Having just bought one I can tell you yes it does. But honestly what is there to know? You put it on the camera you set it to Autofocus or Manual focus and you select what minimum focus you want to use 3.5 or 8.5m it's that simple.

You don't really need the handbook, except maybe for the specs, but it is good to have it along with the original packaging if you ever want to sell the lens.

I do offer online classes on how to use your lens. Sorry couldn't help it. Like others said, there is nothing much to how to use a lens.

most information in any of the lens manuals for me is in the TSE24II and TSE90, but they're a lot more mechanical.
