I have been friends with Amanda for many years, and when she asked me to photograph her wedding I naturally refused. I'd read how hard it is to photograph weddings, and believe that you need a pro photographer. But she has better willpower than me, and after a couple of weeks of wheedling I gave in.

I found this to be a very interesting experience, and I take my hat off to you guys who do this for a living.

1. The wedding was an intimate event with family and some friends. The ceremony was a Humanist wedding, and was the first one I had been to. All of the wedding party were asked to say something about the Bride and Groom, and in this shot the best man was clearly saying something that amused both the bride and groom!

2. White. Who was the sadist who chose white for wedding dresses? Particularly outdoor weddings. Couldn't 18% grey have been chosen? Joking aside, I found the exposures really hard to get anywhere near correct throughout the day.

3. The couple held hands during a large part of the vows.

4. After the ceremony, a few posed photos in an adjacent field...

5.

The couple had done an astounding amount of work to refurbish their cottage in time to have it ready for the wedding. In just five weeks it had gone from being in a terrible state to a truly beautiful house and garden. So these photographs were to commemorate the work that had been done to get to this stage

6. Dratted lens flare...

8. And a little bit of post processing of the bride...

So, conclusions? Wedding photography is hard and the pressure is on all the time. I don't know how to get effective and consistent meeting on my camera outside (I normally use it for indoor stage photographs), and I don't know how to get the results I want without a lot of work in Lightroom.

But it was great fun, and they are a great couple. I really did enjoy the experience!

C+C invited on the photographs!

regards,
/alan

Remember any one who takes photos are by definition a "photographer". A professional is merely someone who acts and behaves professionally.

You're friend obviously knew you had the required standard and wouldn't take no for an answer. And how right she was! They always are (even when they're wrong).

I don't like the last one. I'm one of those irritating people who thing anything other than colour and BW is wrong.

Yes your friend was right. Some photos have blownout whites (which is very hard in non shaded areas) but overall they are great photos.

I don't care about the washed out white. You captured the happiness in each of them and that is what really counts! Look at her huge smile!!

And I want a kilt

Thank you, everyone...I tried getting the whites less blown but that made everything else look really dull... Maybe more work do be done on those dratted sliders!

Kilts are pretty cool, though :) I'm not quite so convinced about tartan trousers!

Since you mentioned LR and you have image editing turned on, I did a two click edit to show you how easy it is in lightroom to add a little pop.

I clicked on the medium contrast preset and then slid the fill light slider over a little because the black jacket had lost all definition.

And then a little more tweaking in the individual colors

Thanks, Chris... an interesting treatment. I especially like the way you kept a lot more detail in the dress than I managed without darkening down the overall picture.
