Do you feel the need to keep both even though they are so close in focal length?

Totaly different lenses! Yes, I need both.

The 85 is great for indoor sports because of its fast accurate focus and the 100 for macro and occasional portrait. I also use the 85 for portrait and low light situations and seldom think of using my 100 f/2.8 for similar occasions.

I use these lenses in 1.6 and 1.3 crop bodies.

Depends if you shoot indoor action, where the faster AF and aperture will make a world of difference. For portraits, the 100mm macro, 70-200 f2.8 and the 50mm f1.4 you already have would provide more than enough coverage and I think you would find the 85mm f1.8 redundant.

(no I don't own either anymore, but I have owned both at one time)

I don't find the need for the 85 f1.8 with the 100 macro and a 70-200 f2.8 lens, especially since the OP has a full frame where these existing lenses will be great for portraits. Of course, if you do indoor sports the faster f1.8 would be useful on the 7D, but again with the high ISO capability I find the 70-200 f2.8 to work well here as well.

My big turnoff with the 85 f1.8 is the purple fringing, which can be very bad at f2.8 and wider where you would be using this lens.

i have the 85 1.8 and 100 2.8 L IS

for portrait use, the 100L has replaced my 85mm.

but when i need a fast lens (dark areas) or when i need a small lens ... the 85 always comes out to play :)
