I am looking for a budget f/2.8 Zoom for my 5D.

Among those I am considering:

Sigma 24-60
Sigma 28-70 non-HSM
Tamron 28-75
Tokina 28-70

Any suggestions? Reviews on most of these are hard to come by except for the Tamron.

I had the Sigma 24-60, but never used it on a FF.

I do have the older Sigma 28-70 f/2.8 Aspherical DG pictured below. The lens does fine, with the usual vignetting wide open at 28mm. Wide open sharpness comes around 40-45mm focal length. Colors and contrast are good, but not "L". My Sigma is soft wide open at 70mm, getting much better at f/4. Wide open at 28mm is fairly sharp. This older model has slow and very noisy AF. Otherwise, a decent lens for the $100 I paid for it.

Unfortunately the most expensive of all the choices.

Great feedback, thanks!

I have used the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 before but not the rest.

What I can tell you is that the IQ from this lens is very much comparable to the Canon 24-70L.

disadvantages: AF speed is slower, hunts a bit in dim light, build is inferior
advantages: Much lighter, much cheaper, smaller in size

If you're looking for IQ, give Tamron a try... I haven't seen too many people complain about the Tamron.

So the tamron 28-75mm 2.8 XR DI is close to the 24-70 for sharpness?

Whoa...why does it have f32 in two different spots on the DOF scale?

And were you selling/just bought that 1D? If not, that's the second one I've seen with the blue rubber around the buttons...what gives?

I would recommend the Tamron 28-75.

That's for the hyperfocal distance. It's to indicate the distances which would be in focus if you happen to stop all the way down to f32.

I guess for the two extremes of the zoom range?

I do not know why that Sigma f/32 twice in two sperate places on the DOF scale. Perhaps it's front/back focus compensation scale...it is a Sigma you know...;)

The body is a 1Ds.
