This is beautiful, I am heading to Cambodia next year and wondering should I take my DSLR, how safe from theft etc.

Hi there,

I replied in your other thread saying that I would take your 17-40 and your 5dii. I never felt unsafe when I was there, juat practise common sense are you are good to go! :-)

Most important is to take in the sights and not constantly be behind your camera.

Have fun!

Thanks, Im tossing up what I take, may take my fuji X100 and a good point and shoot, not because I fear being robbed but just because its so light and I want to enjoy the trip and not be only about photos. I have time to consider this:-)

I am seriously looking at selling my Canon 16-35L MkII and getting this lens instead. Over 80% of my shots are at 16mm with the Canon, and the bulk of the rest are at 24mm or above that my 24-105 would be fine for, so I don’t think I am losing anything. Has anyone here owned both lenses? If so, any feedback on my ‘plan’ would be appreciated. I would be using on a 6D body BTW, so full-frame, although it might get used on my crop body too from time to time.

To be honest, 16-35 2.8mk1 was my most UWA lens used until i bought Canon TS 24II and 17mm, then i sold my 16-35 without regret, and because i had good budget selling 16-35 i got Tamron 15-30 just to have a zoom UWA lens, and i already had this 14mm lens but didn't use it much due to its distortion issue even i sometimes like it, but TS lenses are the crowns.

If you bought TS 17 and 24 i assure that you won't look much at any UWA lenses unless you need fast AF lenses so you can use it either in low light indoor or if you like to shoot astro-graphy where i see many prefer many UWA fast lenses including this Samyang 14mm.

Distortion is not any issue on this lens, it´s easily correctable in post. This lens has wider FOV than traditional 14mm, so even after correction you get basically full 14mm.

advantages :
- It´s MUCH sharper than 16-35MKI or II and optically much better than much more expensive Canon 14mm f/2.8 (excluding distortion)
- you can emulate TS-E24 lenses in post as well with slight loss of resolution.

downsides :

- QA issues (huge copy variation - you really need to test your lens before buy)
- it looks like it can deteriorate overtime (it can be easily decentered if you are not careful enough, even during transportation)
-You can´t use traditional filters like ND
- easily scratchable

Thanks for the feedback folks, something for me to go away and think on.
Although my zoom is sharp at 16mm, that's the only part of the range where it is very good alas (all things being comparative), hence my interest in cutting my losses and going for a sharp prime like the Samyang.
I have the 8mm Samyang, so I know about the last two points you mention palad1n, but well worth you mentioning them.
I would love the TS-E17 Tareq, but budget doesn't allow, and my uses are not primarily architecture so it would be overkill for me I think.
My concerns are echoed in the comment about QA issues - I have nowhere close to me that stocks this lens, so I would have to use mail-order (e.g. Amazon) and hope. I know I can return if unhappy and try another one, but there comes a point where I'm sure they get a bit miffed and unhelpful. The longer-term issues of it decentering after lots of use are also coming to light in this thread, and that also worries me.

Who said that Canon TS17 is only or mostly primarily for architecture? In fact i use it for landscape more than architecture, but i agree about the budget, no comment there.

Also, about distortion, i really hate to correct many distortions by post, i don't have that much to correct with 16-35 that i sold, also with TS i don't have this problem much, say 0-5% only due to tilt and shift features, I said i already have this Samyang 14mm lens but it isn't my choice over TS not even TS24II, also i didn't test my Tamron 15-30 yet, in all cases Samyang is a very cheap lens so i bought it as a bonus lens and it is just a fun to have.

Distortion removal means only two clicks in ACR and this operation can be applied as batch process, so it´s really not a big deal.

The only issue, at least for me, is having this distortion in viewfinder, which can be sometimes distracting.

If you have TS24II and Tamron 15-30 f/2.8, you clearly don´t need low-cost samyang 14mm.... Same thing applies as if you have Samyang 14mm and you are hobbist, you don´t need to spend tousands to get almost identical IQ with some compromises (sure, you cant emulate tiltshift effect on Samyang)

It´s all about finances and priorities.

Don´t worry about long therm issues, it´s very cheap lens and if you get decent copy, it will help you make amazing images. Mine copy got serviced and it works as new.

my front element is starting to have the coatings fail on me, and the lens oddly has a softish spot in the middle of the lens! Cant figure out why that's happening yet, could be due to coating spec on rear element.... I'm sticking it out till it goes in the trash. It's a nice lens, but quite often, the 6 point starts are a deal breaker. Coating issues..... ughhh

That S2000 is beautiful.

Sincerely,
An S2000 and Samyang 14mm owner :D

I think my copy has gotten worse over time, and infinity focus is not really at infinity on my lens. I recently tried a used Canon 14mm, but the Samyang was much sharper, so I returned it. I think I will buy another copy of the Samyang and be content. And I'll just have to deal with not having anything to fill the gap to 24mm.
